Activision Blizzard LogoAnother former internal Vivendi development studio found new owners this week with the two part sale of Swordfish Studios. On Wednesday, massively multiplayer online game middleware developer Monumental Games announced it had acquired the developer’s Manchester office, and today Codemasters has closed a deal for the studio’s main Birmingham office.

Of the two, gamers will be most familiar with the work of the Birmingham studio. They’ve just wrapped up 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand. Along with rugby and cricket titles primarily known in the U.K. market, they also created the spy-shooter Cold Winter for the PS2. It was shortly after the release of that game in 2005 that they were originally acquired by Vivendi. Codemasters has wasted no time bringing their new studio into the fold. The acquisition announcement stated that the studio would be developing original content using Codemaster’s Ego game engine. This technology platform debuted in DiRT, powered GRID, and is being used for the upcoming Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.

For the Manchester group, Monumental Games becomes the next in a growing list of masters they’ve served. Swordfish formed the branch in 2006 around the core of what had been SilverBack Studios, which had itself risen from the ashes of Acclaim’s Manchester Studio. In fact, its one release was the completion of Made Man, a game begun in the Acclaim days (and judging by its reception - and Nick Suttner’s first review for 1UP - one that might better have been left unfinished). For its part, Monumental sounds enthusiastic about their newest addition. CEO Rik Alexander said, “the Swordfish team is one of the few developers worldwide to have fully solved the hugely complex issues involved in running and managing the XLSP (Xbox Live Server Platform) server environments for online console gaming. This knowledge base will help to consolidate Monumental’s position as the market leading online game developer.”
