Dad builds his daughter her own custom arcade machine

Now this is gamer love. A dad builds his daughter, Bella, her very own arcade machine and put it in her room, complete with 250 arcade classics and comes in flaming hot pink. News is a little old, but I figured I’d share it with you guys.

The dad, who goes by “Some guy on the Internet” actually built and restored other arcade cabinets before, so this isn’t a new thing for him. It’s about 80 the size of the original Ms. Pacman machine, it’s about 50 inches tall. An adult can sit on a chair and play, while little Bella still needs a step stool to reach the controls and see the screen.

It’s equipped with a simple Windows98 machine that boots up to a MAME custom skinned with Bella’s Arcade theme. You can play by inserting a coin in the slot, or if you push a button on the coin slot, which could prove useful if little Bella wants to save up some cash.

It’s a real cute story. “I had my dad’s help lifting it up the stairs and I think I destroyed my back but it was worth it,” the dad said. “My daughter LOVES it and she is so excited to have an arcade machine of her own in her room - her reaction was thanks enough.”

Super Mario Kart - Image 1

Guinness World Records EIC Craig Glenday put together an unspecified group of industry experts to form a judging panel and rated the most influential games of all time. So who makes it to the top of their list? Keep your favorites in mind, then find out on the list below.

 1. Super Mario Kart
26. Pokemon Red / Blue
 2. Tetris 27. Guitar Hero
 3. Grand Theft Auto
28. Project Gotham Racing 4
 4. Super Mario World
29. Super Mario Galaxy
 5. Zelda Ocarina of Time
30. Resident Evil
 6. Halo
31. Ico
 7. Resident Evil IV
32. Chrono Trigger
 8. Final Fantasy XII
33. Gunstar Heroes
 9. Street Fighter II
34. Soul Calibur
 10. GoldenEye
35. Advance Wars
 11. Super Mario 64
36. Ridge Racer
 12. Tomb Raider
37. Super Metroid
 13. Metal Gear Solid
38. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
 14. Call of Duty 4
39. GTA Vice City
 15. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
40. BioShock
 16. GTA San Andreas
41. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
 17. Super Mario Bros.
42. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
 18. Zelda: A Link to the Past
43. God of War
 19. Gran Turismo
44. Sega Rally Championship
 20. Final Fantasy VII
45. Starfox 64
 21. Pro Evolution Soccer 4
46. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
 22. The Orange Box
47. WarioWare Inc.
 23. Lego Star Wars Complete Saga
48. Saturn Bomberman
 24. Tekken 2
49. Crash Bandicoot
 25. Wii Sports
50. Outrun 2

My first reaction was, “WTF?!” While I really enjoyed Super Mario Kart in the SNES days and spent countless hours playing and mastering it, I don’t believe it should even be in the Top 10, much less #1. What’s Street Fighter II doing all the way down at #9? I firmly believe it made a hell lot more influence than that, it was the springboard for modern fighting games! Then again, that’s just me.

There are a lot more titles and ranks up there that I couldn’t believe my eyes seeing, but I’m sure you guys have a lot to say about that list. There wasn’t any info given on the criteria on which the judging was made. One thing’s for sure, I’d like to know more about this group of “industry experts.”

EA Sports Readying MotionPlus Games Despite Possible Delay

Wii MotionPlus

For those hoping that EA Sports would immediately incorporate functionality in their games for the Wii MotionPlus (the new add-on that’ll bring a greater degree of accuracy to the Wii’s motion controls), well there’s good news and bad news. Electronic Arts has confirmed that their first wave of Wii sports games this year will indeed include support for the MotionPlus… but that doesn’t mean the device will be out in time to use it.

Confusion over Nintendo’s launch plans for the MotionPlus have surfaced after they changed the release date for Wii Sports Resort, the game the MotionPlus was announced to launch with as a bundle package. Originally planned for a spring 2009 release, the game now only has a less specific “2009″ release on Nintendo’s press site. But as MTV Multiplayer reports, the confusion isn’t changing EA’s plans, as Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 and EA Sports Grand Slam Tennis — both planned to ship on June 16 — will have MotionPlus support built in, whether the device is out or not.

“Tiger and Tennis will be compatible, but not dependent, on WMP,” said David Tinson, head of PR for EA Sports. “They will ship with the functionality, regardless of when WMP comes to market.” EA also recently announced that Dead Space: Extraction — currently planned for release in October — would include MotionPlus functionality as well. [UPDATE: Turns out Dead Space: Extraction won't also have MotionPlus functionality. See details here.]

Wii homebrew - Steady Hand v1.0

This one’s pretty good. Developer DurdaDan released his SteadyHand game, a game where, as the name implies, trembling hands and sweaty palms would make the game much more challenging.

To play, simply guide the icon with your Wiimote and avoid touching the sides, it’s that simple. At 0.09MB, this game only has one level so far. But DurdaDan is working on more levels for the next release.

Dead Space: Extraction Won’t Use MotionPlus, After All

Dead Space: Extraction ‘Debut’ trailer HD

Earlier this week, news spread across the Internet (as news has a habit of doing) that Dead Space: Extraction, a prequel to EA’s survival horror title released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 last year, would incorporate functionality for the upcoming Wii MotionPlus add-on. Well, it turns out that’s not the case, as the report was the product of a misinterpretation.

Here’s what happened: Speaking at the 2009 Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference in San Francisco, Electronic Arts COO John Pleasants touched on the publisher’s plans for the Wii MotionPlus. Evidently he also made mention to Dead Space: Extraction during this same part of his talk, which gave the impression that the game would incorporate functionality with the add-on (whenever it’s actually released). But EA has since confirmed to IGN that the initial reports were in fact a misinterpretation, and Dead Space: Extraction will not use MotionPlus functionality.

As IGN notes, considering Dead Space: Extraction is a “guided FPS” (to use the parlance of its developers) that focuses more on accurate shooting than accurate motion controls, the lack of MotionPlus functionality doesn’t seem like any great loss. The game is currently planned for release in October.

The new Jake Hunter game may not be terrible

6a5a3_jake22809 The new Jake Hunter game may not be terribleWe were ridiculously excited about the North American debut of Workjam’s Tantei Jinguuji Saburo detective adventure series — until Jake Hunter: Detective Chronicles actually came out, and turned out to be a mess of poor localization and incomplete content. Whoops.

North American publisher Aksys Games is taking the rare step of correcting its mistake in the followup, Jake Hunter Detective Story: Memories of the Past. In addition to three new cases (judging by the art, they are the cases from the DS game Tantei Jinguuji Saburo Detective Story: Kienai Kokoro) and six new adorably drawn “comedic” adventures, Memories of the Past also includes all three cases from the first game, with a new localization! “Like a Phoenix, Jake Hunter has been reborn as a game infused with personality and a brand new localization that will keep you coming back for seconds,” Frank deWindt II, project lead for the game, said in the press release. We see what he did there and wonder if it signals an intentionally quirkier re-Wright for the cases.

In other Aksys news, the company announced a very cute multi-instrument music game called Rockin’ Pretty.

Trailer brings Night Game to light

d50de_nightgame22809 Trailer brings Night Game to lightThe first trailer for Nicalis’s Night Game is out, and we find ourselves utterly charmed. The sleepy-time color scheme and sedate music gives the game a mellow feel that should make it relaxing even if the puzzles prove challenging — sort of like Soul Bubbles, which is a nice thing to say about a game.

Night Game appears to be a platformer starring a rolling ball, which, we’re guessing, is controlled by tilting the Wiimote. It’s a simple concept, but even the amount of variation in the objects seen here with which to interact — hanging chains, see-saws, wagons, etc. — combined with whatever the ball controls are should make for an interesting experience. Especially at a WiiWare price!
