DSiWare purchases locked to hardware, only Nintendo can transfer

If you’re bored with your black or electric blue DSi and looking to trade-over to one of the newly released white or pink models, your DSiWare purchases won’t be able to make the journey. Australian site Nintendo Life has confirmed that, with the exception of a broken handheld, purchases made from the DSi Shop are permanently “locked” to the system they’re downloaded onto.

Unlike Xbox 360, PS3 and PSP there’s no method for transferring the rights to downloaded software from one machine to another by the end user. In fact, Nintendo Australia informed the site that, should a DSi break and its owner want its DSiWare moved to a new unit, both must be mailed in to Nintendo, which will perform the process.

We’ve asked Nintendo of America if it has a similar policy for what should be a matter of a simple phone call to de-authorize one DSi and authorize another to download content you’ve already paid for. We’re anticipating a “yes” in response. Then again, as GameSpot points out, NOA’s end user license states “software downloaded from Nintendo DSi Shop is licensed to you, not sold.” Pays to read the fine print.

Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days Review

By the time I finished with Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, my left thumb felt like it was about to fall off. In fact, while playing through it, I frequently had to take breaks during long encounters to rest my aching D-pad hand. But through it all, I persisted. Yes, it’s my job, but also because while I felt I had seen most of what the game had to offer long before the end, I wanted to continue on for more selfish reasons — I wanted to know how the story ended.

Days’ story deals with the concept of souls (or in this case, hearts) and what exactly makes a person “real,” as seen, mostly, through Roxas’ point of view, as he works to understand who he is and where he came from. Regular Kingdom Hearts protagonist Sora is deep in a healing slumber after the events of Chain of Memories, with the witch Naminé working to put his memories back in place. Fans will recall playing as Roxas, Sora’s “Nobody” (a strong person with no heart), at the beginning of Kingdom Hearts 2, and Days will take you through most of the 358 days of Roxas’ life, from when he first joins Organization XIII leading up to the beginning of KH2.

Nintendo Patches The Conduit’s Spawn Glitch?

73b5e_theconduit-485x339 Nintendo Patches The Conduit’s Spawn Glitch?

Yesterday Nintendo released Wii System Update version 4.2, and aside from annoying the modding community by automatically removing the Homebrew Channel, 4.2 seems to have patched a certain problem with the Wii’s flagship first-person shooter, The Conduit.  Several Conduit players have quickly reported that the game’s now infamous spawn glitch has ceased to occur since 4.2’s introduction.

This news arrives months after a report by NintendoEverything that the game’s developer, High Voltage Studios, was working closely with Nintendo for a potential solution to a glitch in the game’s multiplayer mode.

The spawn glitch was a bug that would occur randomly when joining a match, and it would manifest itself by way of a 1/2 or 1/4 reticule in the middle of the screen.  The player would then be stuck in their spawn location, unable to move or fire until the match had ended.  Sometimes the spawn glitch could repeat itself two or three times, leading to much frustration since a system restart would generally be needed to bypass the flaw.

Below is an example of the spawn glitch at work:

We discovered the spawn glitch for ourselves shortly after publishing our review of the game.  Aside from the rampant infestation of hackers, the spawn glitch was the number one problem affecting The Conduit’s otherwise enjoyable multiplayer.

We contacted High Voltage for comment, but at the time of publishing this article we haven’t received a response.

So to see for ourselves whether or not the problem had been fixed, we fired up our copy of the game (after downloading 4.2) and tried a few different matches of multiplayer.  Despite playing the game for about an hour, we encountered no spawn glitches, even when the usual warning signs had appeared.  For us the guaranteed warning sign was usually an improperly timed “3, 2, 1…” countdown from the game’s announcer while we were loading into a new match.  Every time we heard the countdown preceding our entry into a new game, we knew we were in for a system restart.

This time, however, we were greeted not with a spawn glitch, but with a seamless transition into spectator mode until the current match had ended.  Patching of Wii titles after their release is not entirely unheard of as there have been claims that Wii System Update 4.1 had fixed a bug with Wii Sports Resort.

While we can’t officially confirm Nintendo’s patching of the spawn glitch, we can at least note that it has now failed to occur, even with its usual tell-tale signs, after 4.2’s release.  If true, then this system update may be one of the Big N’s best so far, and a much-needed reassurance for both the Wii community and third-part developers as well.  It should at least ease the pain of some annoyed Conduit owners.

Dragon Quest IX Chat Mode Preview

Sometimes, a cliché is a cliché simply because it’s based on a pervasive, inescapable truth. The cliché that Japan loves Dragon Quest is one of these instances. The most recent entry in the series, Dragon Quest IX, has managed to sell more than four million copies since its July release. And while I was in Japan last week for Tokyo Game Show, I saw people playing the game everywhere. Aside from one kid slugging his way through the new Pokémon remake, anyone using a DS on the train (or while simply walking around) was playing DQIX. I peered over dozens of shoulders, and dozens of times I saw the game in action. The popularity of the game over there truly is amazing.

Not to mention infectious: Being surrounded by so many of the game’s fans rekindled my own enthusiasm for it. I sank about 30 hours into it when it was first released in Japan in July, which was just long enough to acquire a boat for my party. Traditionally, that’s also the point in a Dragon Quest game when the world fully opens up and players are left to their own devices, exploring freely until they find the next plot thread. It’s always my favorite part of the games, but in this case, it seemed like a good stopping point; there was already a lot going on outside of the main story, and my poor Japanese literacy meant I was only gleaning the loosest sense of all the quests. And yet, here I am back home in the U.S., with another ten hours on my game clock.

Hands-on: Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles

20772_redc0729 Hands-on: Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles

If there’s one thing to be thankful for in the face of Capcom’s steady stream of Resident Evil games, it’s that we’ve all been given a fairly comprehensive education on the undead blight. We can see a zombie coming a mile away, which presents an odd sense of frustration when the game’s own characters fail to do the same. No, that person isn’t sick. It’s a zombie and it’s going to bite your neck off. Just shoot it!

The Darkside Chronicles, an instantly familiar follow-up to the Wii’s Umbrella Chronicles, often hesitates to pull the trigger. It takes a leisurely stroll when least appropriate and it’s slow to react when things do get exciting. You might think that your friends Survival-Horror and On-Rails Shooter would get along just fine, but leave them both in the room while you go to the toilet and it’s just awkward silence.

Snap Judgment: Dead Space Extraction

When we review a game without finishing it, we call it a Snap Judgment. Read why here.

Time played: 3 hours

I’m personally a big fan of on-rails shooters, a genre that I think rarely gets its due. I’m not all that big on exploration, and I’m lazy, so having someone else take the reigns for me is a welcome relief, allowing me to focus on the all-important business of murder.

So it’s quite a treat to see a game like Dead Space Extraction that strikes a blow for lazy guys everywhere by finding the strengths of the genre and running with them.
