Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles is the second Resident Evil-themed light-gun game for the Wii, the first being Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles released in 2007.

Like its predecessor, Darkside Chronicles takes specific games from the Resident Evil series – in this case Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica – and lets you replay the titles in a re-imagined on-rails shooter entry.

But there’s no need to have played Umbrella Chronicles in order to understand or enjoy Darkside Chronicles.  Since each game takes specific Resident Evil titles in no specific order and re-presents them in light-gun shooter format, you don’t need to play the games together or successively.

So while I have still yet to play Umbrella Chronicles (though I have beaten every main Resident Evil entry save for numbers 4 and 5), I still mostly understood what was occurring through a majority of Darkside Chronicles.  If you’re looking at diving into this title without any experience with Umbrella Chronicles, this review is certainly for you.

Darkside Chronicles opens with an entirely new storyline featuring Resident Evil 2 and 4 protagonist Leon Kennedy and his new partner, Jack Krauser, as they explore the South American village of Amparo to eradicate the Veronica Virus once and for all.  The new chapter, entitled “Operation Javier,” takes place continuity-wise before the events of Resident Evil 4, and in this game, sandwiches the recycled content of Resident Evil 2 and Code Veronica.  So Darkside Chronicles basically opens and ends with the new South American chapter while using Resident Evil 2 and Code Veronica as the filler.

Like most light-gun titles on the Wii, Darkside Chronicles can be played either with the Wii remote itself or with the Wii Zapper peripheral and either in one or two-player mode.  I journeyed through the entire game in two-player mode using the Wii Zapper while my partner in crime simply used the Wii remote itself.

The controls are simple and intuitive whether you’re using a Wii remote or the Wii Zapper.  Your “B” button will fire while “A” (or “Z” if you’re using the Zapper) will pick up items or do a knife attack if you swing the remote while holding down the button.  Aside from that, you can change weapons in the fly with either the D-pad or analog stick on the nunchuck, and you can assign different weapons to the D-pad and analog stick from your weapons menu.
