0bd91_mariogalaxy223 Nintendo Australia: Super Mario Galaxy 2, Metroid Other M out this summerIGN reports that Nintendo of Australia released some big news about two upcoming Wii titles at its media summit. Metroid: Other M and Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be released between June and August. Other M was previously named as a summer release by Nintendo of Japan, but Galaxy has only ever been specified as “2010.”

Those dates are presumably for Australia, but at least set a rough time frame for the rest of the world. We’ll find out more tomorrow during Nintendo’s US media summit.

Nintendo Australia also dated the black Wii console (March 11) and the DSi XL (April 15, in burgundy and bronze).

OFLC rates two new games by Chibi Robo, Art Style dev

a1913_pentatentacles219 OFLC rates two new games by Chibi Robo, Art Style devTwo mysterious new games from a known DSiWare developer have been rated by Australia’s OFLC. Skip, creator of most of the Art Style games — as well as Chibi-Robo! — is named as the author of both Light Trax and Penta Tentacles, with Nintendo as publisher.

Though no specific platform is named for either, Skip’s recent output has been targeted entirely at the DS, with LOL and a Japan-only Chibi-Robo sequel released in addition to several DSiWare Art Style games. With all that evidence, we’re guessing these two will be released on Game and Watch.

Nintendo wins R4 piracy suit in Australia: Pay up, pirates!

Nintendo’s march against the R4 mod cartridge for the DS rolls on this week, as the company has won a lawsuit against an Australian distributor of the now-illegal device, according to iTNews. RSJ IT Solutions, which sold the R4 through gadgetgear.com.au, was ordered to stop selling the device and fined $520,000 ($466,752 USD) in damages payable to Nintendo. Two other respondents named by Nintendo in the suit, Patrick Li and James Li, were also ordered to stop selling the R4 in Australia and fined $100,000 ($89,760 USD). Furthermore, the two are required to disclose the names of their R4 suppliers.

This marks Nintendo’s second major blow to piracy in Australia this month. Last week, Nintendo was successfully awarded $1.5 million ($1.3 million USD) in damages to be paid by a remorseful Australian man, who was found to be the first to upload New Super Mario Bros. Wii to the internet. Lest any potential pirates out there haven’t figured it out yet — especially those in Australia — Nintendo isn’t messing around.

Australian NSMB Wii pirate to gamers: ‘Don’t do what I did’

“For James Burt, it’s game over.” Faced with paying a $1.5 million ($1.3 million USD) fine to Nintendo — along with additional court costs — the 24-year-old Australian man who illegally uploaded New Super Mario Bros. Wii to the internet now has to endure the trite (see: “game over” line) and unsympathetic reporting of a local TV show called “A Current Affair.” Here’s question one: “You do admit that what you did was quite stupid?” BAM.

Nintendo Australia’s Rose Lappin claims the pirated plumber code was downloaded approximately 50,000 times after Burt bought a copy from a retailer that failed to adhere to the street date. “It’s no different to stealing anything else,” she concluded, reflecting Nintendo’s unflinching legal stance in the matter.

As for Burt’s considerable debt, he said, “It’s something I’m going to have to work through for the rest of my life.” It’s a clear example and a harsh punishment — especially when so many pirates escape without repercussion — that Burt has warned his fellow gamers against. Seriously, guys, do not duplicate that disc.

Nintendo Australia fines NSMB Wii uploader $1.5 million

776aa_nsmb2910 Nintendo Australia fines NSMB Wii uploader $1.5 millionFinally, Nintendo has been able to make a little money from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, a sequel to one of its old franchises, released this November. Nintendo of Australia announced that as the result of a federal court settlement, one Australian will be required to pay $1.5 million ($1.3 million USD) to Nintendo for loss of revenue due. This person was allegedly the first to upload New Super Mario Bros. Wii to the internet, doing so on November 6, one week before the game was released (an act that facilitated creative works in addition to piracy).

Not only is this bad news for this one guy, it should also serve as a warning to other would-be pirates. “Upon the game being uploaded to the Internet, Nintendo was able to employ the use of sophisticated technological forensics to identify the individual responsible for illegally copying the file and making it available for further distribution,” Nintendo said in a press release. “On 23 November, 2009, Nintendo obtained a Federal Court search order in respect of the individual’s residential premises. This led to the seizure of property from those premises in order to gain further evidence against the individual.”

If you upload Nintendo games, the company will come to your house and take your stuff. Chilling.

[Thanks, Foetoid]

Scientists using Balance Board in stroke rehab

While the Balance Board is a good tool for controlling cute little monkeys and perhaps creating a career, Australian scientists have found it’s also an inexpensive way to measure the balance in stroke patients. University of Melbourne scientist Ross Clark decided to pick one up after reading that some physicians were using Wiimotes to help recuperating soldiers, and found it to be “an extremely impressive strain gauge set-up.” That’s a very good thing, considering the only alternative is a “force platform” which can set scientists back a hefty £11,000 ($15,700).

There aren’t any results out of Melbourne yet, but if you’re interested in what’s under the hood of that little plastic pad you’re slowly turning a kind of brownish-black (would it kill you to wear clean socks when using it?), check out this Nintendo Channel video from back in the day.

Castlevania: Rondo of Blood Rated for Australian Virtual Console

09597_rondo-485x434 Castlevania: Rondo of Blood Rated for Australian Virtual Console

Now this is something we’ve been waiting for with much enthusiasm.  The infamous 1993 PC-Engine game, Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, is making its way to the Australian Virtual Console according to a recent entry in the Classification Database for the OFLC (Office of Film and Literature Classification).  It has been given a classification of “M” for mature.

Rondo of Blood debuted in Japan two years after the Super NES title Super Castlevania IV, and it made full use of the PC-Engine’s CD-ROM format by including anime cutscenes and CD-quality sound.  However, the original version was never released in America until 2007 when Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles arrived on the PSP.  A watered down port arrived on the SNES in 1995 under the title of “Castlevania: Dracula X,” but it lacked many of the stellar features of the original title (even though it contained rather high-quality music like its counterpart).

The original version has been available on the Japanese Virtual Console since April of 2008, but this marks the first time that Konami has emulated the game for English-speaking audiences.

It wouldn’t make much sense for Konami to release this long-awaited game in Australia alone, so we expect the game to arrive in the States some time next year, likely after Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth hits WiiWare.  We’ll keep you updated as more information arrives.

Australian Virtual Console to Get Ogre Battle 64

Australia’s OFLC (Office of Film and Literature Classification) has posted a rating today for Atlus’s strategy-based Nintendo 64 title, Ogre Battle 64, meaning that the title is headed to the Australian Virtual Console some time soon.  The classification board has given the title a rating of “PG” for “Mild fantasy violence” and lists “Nintendo Co., LTD.” as the publisher.

The real-time strategy/role-playing title developed by Quest/Nintendo was a rare example of an original (and highly regarded) RPG for the generally RPG-bereft Nintendo 64.  Much like Sin & Punishment, a virtual console release of Ogre Battle 64 may help to bring a rare title into the hands of several old-school Nintendo 64 fans, as well as RPG aficionados.

There’s no word on an American release so far, but with Nintendo evidently publishing the title itself, it wouldn’t be too unlikely for the game to arrive in the U.S. shortly after landing in Australia.

2ce18_mario1028 Dress up at Australian New Super Mario Bros. Wii midnight launch for fabulous prizesIf you live near Melbourne, Australia, you’ll have the opportunity to pick up New Super Mario Bros. Wii a bit early, and either vie for a lovely prize or laugh at people in silly costumes! Nintendo is holding a midnight launch event for the game on Wednesday night, November 11, at its “Nintendo Experience” EBGames store.

Attendees will have a chance to win the glass laser-etched Mario statue seen above, provided they’re willing to dress up as their favorite Mario character. Does the Kuribo’s Shoe count as a character?

If you don’t already have a costume, you’ll have the beginning of a (terrible) Mario outfit once you pick up your pre-order: EB in Australia is giving away Mario baseball caps with reserved copies.

OFLC: Two more Street Fighter games on Virtual Console

cc0ea_pcesf209102 OFLC: Two more Street Fighter games on Virtual ConsoleWith the slowing pace at which Nintendo releases Virtual Console games, it’s taking longer and longer for our Virtually Overlooked columns to be revealed as prescient — but it’s happening. The Australian OFLC ratings board has just revealed two classic Street Fighter games heading to Wii soon: Street Fighter II’ Champion Edition and … Fighting Street, the Turbografx-16 CD version of the very first Street Fighter.

The Champion Edition could be the arcade game, but is probably the PC Engine version, which is surprisingly faithful for an 8-bit port of the arcade game. It’s another port, but, like Fighting Street, it holds value as a curiosity.
