Capcom’s VP of strategic planning and business development, Christian Svensson, officially confirmed the retailer-listed $40 price for the upcoming car vandalism sim, Super Street Fighter IV, in a recent interview with Gamasutra. Expanding on statements made when the game was first announced, Svensson said, “Going $10 above Platinum/Greatest Hits pricing was sort of a nice compromise … It’s $40 — we had two choices, and the economics didn’t work out on one … no matter what, we were fracturing the userbase, and we had to start from scratch.”

He went on to explain that the content was simply too much for a platinum version of the game, and that a new release would render cross-game play between SFIV and SSFIV impossible due to differing “title IDs.” Svensson also teased that those who played SFIV on the system for which they purchase SSFIV will get access to “a nifty little special set of things that those people will have the option of enjoying that others won’t.”

Moving on to the subject of January’s launch of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, Svensson said, “We’re a couple weeks in right now, and we’ve been doing re-orders. We’re not at all dissatisfied with the sales at this point.” As for long-term sales of the game, he added, “We are cautiously optimistic that it’s going to have long legs … the Versus series is well served by Tatsunoko as an outing. It really happens bring Versus back as a viable brand for Capcom.” With any luck that means we’ll see more … interesting mashups from Capcom’s Versus series in the coming years. Maybe Nintendo or Square? Whaddya say, folks?

Welcome Wii-centric studio Judobaby to the world

4aac6_judobaby-1267460705 Welcome Wii-centric studio Judobaby to the worldSeveral old hands from Sony, Crystal Dynamics, Sega, and Capcom have unveiled their newest project, Wii-focused developer Judobaby, to the world. Just like a real baby, it’s been in “stealth development” for around a year*, crafting its family-friendly first release as part of what the company says will be “a line of fun, humorous, ‘pick-up & play’ products.” At the helm of the Redwood City, California firm is Dan Mueller, who last founded the now-dead BottleRocket.

Its secret project is set to launch this year, and Gamasutra reports there’s already talk of “a live-action motion picture tie-in.” Subsequently, we hope that you will join with us and sign this petition, protesting the rumored film version of this game that we will some day care about a great deal, maybe. The time for action is later! (But we’re getting a head start.)

*Yes, we understand the gestation time for a typical human is nine months. Please stop messing up our joke.

Monster Hunter Tri ads mock non-monster hunters

cef90_ironbeard31102 Monster Hunter Tri ads mock non-monster huntersIt’s rare for someone to berate you for not being tough enough for a Wii game, but that’s exactly what Capcom’s Monster Hunter Tri spokes-character Ironbeard does in this surprisingly funny series of ads. The Scottish huntsman mocks people for thinking that hunting real, regular-sized animals is hard when there are monsters to be hunted in Capcom’s upcoming Wii game.

Not only are these ads, which you can view after the break, funny, they’re also kind of effective. We don’t want to look at this fictional character with shame! We want him to be proud of us for being man enough to hunt giant fake monsters.

[Thanks, Kieran!]

Mega Man Zero Collection delayed in Japan

d1e49_mmzc2262 Mega Man Zero Collection delayed in JapanCapcom has terrible luck with handheld Mega Man compilations. Remember how a collection of the Game Boy Mega Man games was supposed to be released alongside the GameCube/PS2 Mega Man Anniversary Collection? Remember when that actually happened? (No, because it didn’t.) Now the Japanese website for the DS Mega Man Zero Collection reveals that the game’s April 22 release date in that region has been delayed to an unspecified date.

We’ve put in an inquiry with Capcom about whether this affects the “early summer” release date for North America. But if the company doesn’t know when it’ll release the game in Japan, the other dates would pretty much have to be up in the air as well.

RE5 Gold tops Japanese charts; Heavy Rain floods top ten

ecd2c_re5gold226 RE5 Gold tops Japanese charts; Heavy Rain floods top tenEven without the PlayStation Motion Controller to back it up, Resident Evil 5 has struck gold for a second time. The PS3 version of Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition (Alternative Edition in Japan) hit the top of the Media Create sales chart in Japan following its February 18 release, selling 143,339 copies. God Eater continues to gobble up attention, taking the #2 spot with 64,192 units sold (while passing 500k units sold to date).

Another big PS3 game also debuted in the top ten this week: Heavy Rain, which fell in at #6, selling 26,775 copies. In a way, the Japanese version is the superior release, because the voice acting doesn’t seem to have been performed by French people faking Japanese accents. See the full top ten after the break.

Capcom’s Monster Hunter Tri was a big focal point at yesterday’s Nintendo Media Summit, but there seems to be a bit of confusion surrounding the demo disc shipping March 8. It turns out, that isn’t the GameStop pre-order incentive it was made out to be. Instead, the demo disc will be free for all — a GameStop pre-order will net you a card with 500 Wii Points on it.

As for getting the demo disc, you’ll be able to walk into any GameStop location and grab one starting March 8.

This Miles Edgeworth art has ruined us

Our puritanical grandmother always tried to convince us that art is evil, but we never believed her until this morning. Though we fell asleep in a world where we loved every square pixel of Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, we awake to this gorgeous fan art from DeviantArt user brilcrist and now all we can think of is how much we wish the game looked exactly like that.

So, Capcom, what would you say to a big-budget, meticulously detailed game centered on Miles Edgeworth costing millions of dollars and countless man hours to produce?

… Hey, where are you going?

Monster Hunter 3: No Friend Codes Confirmed

8b092_monster-484x272 Monster Hunter 3: No Friend Codes Confirmed

We had heard for a little while that the North American and European versions of Monster Hunter 3 would likely not be hampered by Nintendo’s friend codes system.  But now, thanks to statements by Nintendo’s sales and marketing EVP, Cammie Dunaway, we can officially confirm this rumor.

During Nintendo’s Q1 Media Summit in San Francisco this week, Dunaway confirmed the lack of a friend code requirement in the upcoming Capcom title for the Wii, stating, “We felt that this was the best way to deliver [Monster Hunter Tri].”

This means that not only will the title have free online play and text and voice-based chat (available through Wii Speak) when it arrives in the U.S. on April 20, but the game will allow you to group with anyone, and evidently, speak with anyone via text or even Wii Speak.  Hello annoying 12-year-olds!

So why the exception to the usual rule of “make it free, make it easy, make it safe” in regards to Nintendo’s Wi-Fi Connection service?  After all, friend codes were part of the keep it safe idea since they would “create an online environment free of harassment.”  Without friend codes in place, I could very well run into this lovely kid.

Dunaway is quoted as saying, “With each title we’ll make the right determination.”  So I guess that means if you have a good enough game Nintendo will let you fudge the rules a bit.

But Nintendo’s voice chat has an interesting feature: it’s based on a table top – er, TV top – microphone that picks up every nearby voice in the room.  So let’s say a pre-pubescent little foul-mouth gets pissed at me for not killing that massive water-dwelling Lagiacrus and starts throwing out every available curse word in the English dictionary.  Not only would his parents likely hear everything I say back, but I would hear everything his parents say him, including any subsequent scoldings and/or beatings.  Youtube is going to love this.

I’ll report back in April with my findings on the unhampered voice chat soon to be flooded by Nintendo fans.  We’ll see if they behave themselves any better than certain Xbox Live gamers, though I’m not holding my breath.

Monster Hunter Tri releases April 20, will be free to play

3ddb1_shakalaka-grill02-580w Monster Hunter Tri releases April 20, will be free to play

At today’s Nintendo Media Summit, Nintendo dropped some pertinent details about Capcom’s very successful and Wii Speak-compatible hunt-em-up, Monster Hunter Tri. The game will release on April 20 in North America as two versions: bundled with a Classic Controller Pro for $59.99 (while supplies last) and as a standalone game for $49.99. The game will also ditch the pay-to-play model for online play, as used in Japan, in favor of free online functionality. Additionally, GameStop pre-orderers will receive a demo disc on March 8.

Considering Capcom was beating itself up over whether or not to charge for online play, we’re glad the publisher finally came around and went with the option that requires us to spend less money. Just imagine — with all the money we’ll save, we can import even more delicious ramen!
