High Voltage Software’s High Voltage Hot Rod Show is an arcade racer fetching 1,000 Wii Points on WiiWare. Is it worth that price? How fun is it? These questions, and more, are answered in our review past the break.

High Voltage Hot Rod Show is a simple arcade racer with one goal: keep up the speed and do your best to win the race. You can keep your speed going through a variety of items placed around the track. There are paths you can hit on the ground that give you speed boost, or you can perform stunts when in the air, boosting when you hit the ground. There are also a variety of ramps littered around the course which let you fly through loops that sit in the air, providing a good bit of boost should you navigate your racer through them.

And how does one race? Well, in the controls department, the game handles very much like Mario Kart Wii. You hold the Wiimote sideways, tilting it to steer your racer, while you hold the 2 button in for your throttle. When in the air, you shake the Wiimote to perform stunts, just like in Mario Kart Wii. In fact, we even played the game with the Wii Wheel some. It felt very natural! But, if that’s not your sort of thing, you could always use a GameCube controller.

Controlling your racer can be tough at times, as the CPU doesn’t like to lay down and quit too easily. They’ll ram you into walls, push you out of the track boundaries when you’re grabbing some air, and make it a very difficult time to get back in the lead if you’ve fallen behind the pack. The CPU isn’t cheap, mind you, but does have a bit of a competitive spirit.

Aside from the regular Championship mode, which takes you through a few of the 6 available tracks and gives you a trophy at the end, depending on your performance, there’s also Time Trial mode, where you seek to get good lap times. You can even upload your best lap times online, comparing times with your friends to see who’s the best hot rod racer. There’s also a local multiplayer mode, if splitscreen racing is your cup of tea.

For 1,000 Wii Points, High Voltage Hot Rod Show is a pretty content-filled package. The racing itself is fun and you really get a good sense of speed when gathering boost, making it that much harder to control your racer. But, that’s the fun of an arcade game such as this. If you enjoy arcade racers or classics such as Rock N’ Roll Racing or RC Pro Am, then you’ll get a kick out of this.

Final score: 8/10

If you’re so crazy that you want to go to the store and buy something when you could be playing World of Goo or Mega Man 9, we can help with that, too.

WiiWare to look forward to in the next two weeks

Wow, two WiiWare card game stories in one day! This one is likely to have more immediate payoff, however. In addition to Planet Pachinko, North American gamers can (probably) expect Jungle Speed to be available, for 1,000 points. Jungle Speed is a card game in which players sequentially flip over cards until they reveal two identical cards, at which point they must race to reach for a totem in the middle of the table. The high-speed gameplay sounds like a potentially interesting Wii party game.

While the press release doesn’t mention the developer, an OFLC listing identified them as Next Level Games, the Canadian company behind Super Mario Strikers and the new Punch-Out!! This is likely to be true, as the game is apparently “produced with the financial participation of Telefilm Canada”. Government-subsidized WiiWare!

The next Monday, January 19, High Voltage Hot Rod Show, the racing game from the developers of The Conduit, will go up on WiiWare, also for 1,000 Wii Points.

High Voltage Hot Rod Show ‘basically finished’

Even though it’s the most recent High Voltage game to be revealed, there’s a good chance High Voltage Hot Rod Show will beat both The Conduit and Animales de la Muerte to market. In an interview with WiiWare World, producer Josh VanVeld has revealed the game is “basically finished,” and discussed the racer in quite a bit more detail.

The games that influenced Hot Rod Show are enough to make us excited for the project; VanVeld namedrops the likes of R.C. Pro-Am, Micro Machines, and Racing Gears Advance (while criticizing the likes of Excite Truck and recent versions of Mario Kart for “losing some of their focus”). In Hot Rod Show, close quarters racing and the long-forgotten art of memorizing tracks will be the order of the day. Typically for a High Voltage game, loads of attention has been paid to the controls. VanVeld reports that we can use a horizontally positioned Wii Remote (as in Excite Truck), the Classic Controller, a GameCube controller, or add a Nunchuk and use the thumbstick for steering.

After the disaster that was SPOGS Racing, there’s definitely room on WiiWare for a cheap, well-made racer that can be enjoyed with friends (VanVeld says four-player splitscreen “could be the best experience you’ll have with the game”); we can easily imagine High Voltage Hot Rod Show being that game.

It would appear that High Voltage made a pretty penny or two from their last WiiWare release, Gyrostarr, as the company has announced they’re working on a new game for WiiWare. Titled High Voltage Hot Rod Show, this game will be hitting WiiWare this fall and features a “unique stunt system” that gives players “multiple ways to build boost.” The game will utilize the company’s Quantum 3 engine technology and has support for up to 4 players via local split-screen, features 5 racers, and has 6 different tracks.

After checking out the trailer above, be sure to hit up our gallery below, which has screens from the game, as well as some promo art and wallpapers!
