Nintendo Patches The Conduit’s Spawn Glitch?

73b5e_theconduit-485x339 Nintendo Patches The Conduit’s Spawn Glitch?

Yesterday Nintendo released Wii System Update version 4.2, and aside from annoying the modding community by automatically removing the Homebrew Channel, 4.2 seems to have patched a certain problem with the Wii’s flagship first-person shooter, The Conduit.  Several Conduit players have quickly reported that the game’s now infamous spawn glitch has ceased to occur since 4.2’s introduction.

This news arrives months after a report by NintendoEverything that the game’s developer, High Voltage Studios, was working closely with Nintendo for a potential solution to a glitch in the game’s multiplayer mode.

The spawn glitch was a bug that would occur randomly when joining a match, and it would manifest itself by way of a 1/2 or 1/4 reticule in the middle of the screen.  The player would then be stuck in their spawn location, unable to move or fire until the match had ended.  Sometimes the spawn glitch could repeat itself two or three times, leading to much frustration since a system restart would generally be needed to bypass the flaw.

Below is an example of the spawn glitch at work:

We discovered the spawn glitch for ourselves shortly after publishing our review of the game.  Aside from the rampant infestation of hackers, the spawn glitch was the number one problem affecting The Conduit’s otherwise enjoyable multiplayer.

We contacted High Voltage for comment, but at the time of publishing this article we haven’t received a response.

So to see for ourselves whether or not the problem had been fixed, we fired up our copy of the game (after downloading 4.2) and tried a few different matches of multiplayer.  Despite playing the game for about an hour, we encountered no spawn glitches, even when the usual warning signs had appeared.  For us the guaranteed warning sign was usually an improperly timed “3, 2, 1…” countdown from the game’s announcer while we were loading into a new match.  Every time we heard the countdown preceding our entry into a new game, we knew we were in for a system restart.

This time, however, we were greeted not with a spawn glitch, but with a seamless transition into spectator mode until the current match had ended.  Patching of Wii titles after their release is not entirely unheard of as there have been claims that Wii System Update 4.1 had fixed a bug with Wii Sports Resort.

While we can’t officially confirm Nintendo’s patching of the spawn glitch, we can at least note that it has now failed to occur, even with its usual tell-tale signs, after 4.2’s release.  If true, then this system update may be one of the Big N’s best so far, and a much-needed reassurance for both the Wii community and third-part developers as well.  It should at least ease the pain of some annoyed Conduit owners.

Wii System Menu updated to 3.5 in Korea

4523a_wiikorea305092 Wii System Menu updated to 3.5 in KoreaA preview of what’s on the way for the rest of the world: four months after 3.4, Nintendo has sent out Wii System Menu version 3.5 in Korea. The specific feature changes are as yet unknown, but in terms of security updates, it includes IOS254 code, which, like IOS9, blocks the use of the PatchMii program (a custom update manager tool).

The new menu apparently adds some kind of updates to the Shop Channel, and adds a “Region Select Channel,” which the Wiibrew wiki suggests is nowhere near as exciting as it sounds. Until we find out for certain that this somehow blocks new installations of the Homebrew Channel, or removes existing ones, we’re going to refrain from panicking. And even in that case, we don’t mind waiting a week or so for someone to fix it.

Update: Reader CJLopez turned us on to 1.01, which fixes some bugs from 1.0. Adjusted the source link to point to the newer version.

That’s right, folks. The Homebrew Channel has left the beta stages and become The Homebrew Channel 1.0. Actually, it’s still kind of considered to be in beta, but, hey, we can all it 1.0! As for updating it, you can do it the hard way, by downloading the update here, or you can simply update through your existing Homebrew Channel on your Wii. That is, if you didn’t update your Wii to 3.4 yet. Of course, with the new Twilight Hack, it’s not like it’s much of a nuisance, anyway.

Head past the break for the update notes.

  • meta.xml now handles all ISO-8859-1 characters properly (you can use either UTF-8 or ISO-8859-1 encoding, but UTF-8 is restricted to the ISO subset)
  • Wiimote power button support (shutdown)
  • Wiimote rumble honors system setting
  • Fixed some crash bugs
  • Fix meta.xml UNIX style newline regression
  • All wiimotes work now, not just the first one (only one can point at a time though)
  • Classic Controller support
  • Nunchuk support (scroll only, using the stick)
  • Guitar Hero 3 guitar support
  • Left and right change pages too
  • Hit 1 on Wiimote to retry the network connection (like clicking on the network icon or Z on the GC pad)
  • Added information to the installer
  • Fixed some networking issues with networking disabled (and possibly other bugs)
  • Pushed in some text to avoid overscan crop
  • Widened video width to match system menu (”black bars” fix)
  • B returns from app screen (unless scrolling with B-hold)
  • Try to initialize network earlier (slight speedup)
  • Retry network initialization a few times
  • Fix a networking issue (libogc problem)
  • Reload stub now identifies itself (magic number, for future use)
  • Support broken HTTP proxies in update check
  • Show IOS revision in main menu
  • () -> * (Hint: old-school Wiimote support needed what? Try it both ways.)

1.01 updates:

  • Fixed B button issues (app screen corruption, crash on B+A)
  • Wiimotes now keep the ordering from the System Menu (libogc) (note: they’ll switch again when you boot apps that haven’t been updated like HBC has - but they would have switched anyway, and HBC can use all Wiimotes, so you don’t lose anything while those apps are updated)
  • Hopefully fixed the USB Ethernet issues (couldn’t find a tester, even without a USB Gecko… it’s like they all disappeared after reporting the bug. Hope this fixes it)
  • Fixed wiimote auto-shutdown (libogc) (now you don’t need a ridiculously perfectly still wiimote for it to shut down - playing music won’t cause your wiimote batteries to die)
  • Hopefully fixed “video after shutdown” issues (libogc)
  • Changes to () -> *

7bd76_twilight-hack-is-back It lives! The Twilight Hack returnsOccasionally, you do have to wonder why Nintendo bothers. In typical fashion, the latest Wii Menu update (released only seven days ago) was designed to render the Twilight Hack useless. Also in typical fashion, it’s already been beaten, proving yet again that you can’t keep a good hack down.

While some in the homebrew community predicted that the 3.4 update would sound the death knell for the Twilight Hack, Team Twiizers has now written and released new, Wii Menu 3.4-compatible code (though as usual, updating your Wii isn’t recommended unless it’s an absolute must).

HackMii has a link to the new file and all necessary instructions, so let the brewing of homes recommence!

Or read about the app that lets you play games from other regions? What about getting Goldeneye to run on Wii? Alternatively, you could just use homebrew to get your cheat on.

Nintendo is at it again, unleashing yet another Wii Menu Update, rolling the system along to 3.4, as our glowing Wii just informed us. Aside from augmenting the Nintendo User Agreement, the new system update will also “check for and automatically remove” all “unauthorized modifications to save files.” Guess what, homebrew fans? The party is over forever put on hold for the time being.

This is basically all of the info we have right now, but we’re sure the homebrew community will step up soon with a response to this. You know how they hate it when Nintendo tries to stop them from running their homebrew.

Keep on eye on Wii Fanboy for more on this as it’s made available.

Well, that was fast. That recent update that wouldn’t allow users to install the Homebrew Channel? It’s been bested, as the Homebrew Channel beta9 has been released. Among working with the latest update, beta9 also brings the following fixes to the table:

  • Installer / updater now works with the October 23 update
  • SDHC support
  • REALLY fixed the memcard bug
  • Installer now picks newest sane IOS, fixes some beta8 regressions
  • Added a reload button (for SD card changes)
  • Return to system menu skips warning
  • Fixed some graphical glitches
  • Saner XML load code
  • Many fixes to underlying stuff in the newer libogc

New System Update may block Homebrew Channel [update]

c4631_shop1023 New System Update may block Homebrew Channel [update]

Update: Reader John writes in and points us to Wiibrew, who is reporting this update kills The Homebrew Channel, as well as the Mplayer that makes DVD play possible. If you’ve already followed our guide for playing DVDs and installed The Homebrew Channel, then you’re fine.

Chances are, your Wii may have told you this already — either through the friendly blue light or a message that pops up when you load the Wii Shop Channel. But in case it hasn’t, Nintendo has sent out a new Wii firmware update. In Japan, the software is up to 3.4. The Shop Channel is down for maintenance as well, as all references to Wii Points are changed to “Nintendo Points” and various other pre-DSi maintenance is done. But in America and Europe, not much seems to have changed.

This NeoGAF thread is tracking the potential changes — most notably that some people are now unable to install the Homebrew Channel. People with pre-existing installations are fine, but it’s possible that this new update has blocked the ability to install homebrew. There was a fairly ominous message in the update description about deleting altered saves! Of course, these reports could turn out to be in error.

Other reported effects include improved Shop Channel loading speed, possibly reorganized item listings, and nothing.
