Last week, the Rock Band Store got a few healthy slices of Americana with tracks from Otis Redding and the Brian Setzer Orchestra. This week’s offerings are much more foreign — there’s a three-pack from Finnish rock band HIM, a song from Britain’s One Night Only, a track from The Police, and a song from Marilyn Manson, whom we all know actually descends from an extinct alien race whose name our human tongues could never hope to pronounce.

Click past the jump for the full list of new additions!

Eclectic might be a bit of an understatement when it comes to next week’s Rock Band Weekly offerings, which run the gamut from soul to electronica to swing. Otis Redding dominates the majority of the new tunes, which is just fine by us. As for the rest, well you’re just going to have to hit the jump to see!

Things took a step towards the alternative in last month’s Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero DLC offerings, but it seems February will see the games’ downloadable music get back on the path of straight-up rock. We’ll be seeing new (old) jams from 30 Seconds to Mars, Breaking Benjamin, Third-Eye Blind and Black Sabbath. We personally can’t wait to see Taylor Swift cover Ozzy’s part on “Sweet Leaf.”

All track packs will be available for $5.49 on PS3, 550 Wii Points or 44066d2f_microsoftpointslogosmall Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero: February DLC on Xbox 360. In addition, all songs will be available seperately for $1.99, 200 Wii Points or 16066d2f_microsoftpointslogosmall Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero: February DLC. Head past the break for the complete list of February’s downloadable songs.

Rhythm game devs: genre hasn’t peaked, user-generated content is key

In the latest issue of Edge Magazine, Harmonix head Alex Rigopulos and Neversoft project director Brian Bright both speak out regarding the current state of rhythm-music gaming. As you might imagine, neither developer thinks that the genre is flatlining. In fact, Rigopulos even believes that “future music games will exceed the sales success of the last generation.”

Surprisingly, though, while each heads up their own approach to the genre, the two seem to be in near-direct agreement on the next step for their franchises. “User-generated content will be absolutely critical to the ongoing success of the genre, I think,” Rigopulos says. Bright echoes his statement, saying, “I think user-created content is key to the evolution … if you can’t create or edit licensed music due to copyright laws, then you’re limited to pretending to play someone else’s music.”

That said, each developer differs in their definition of exactly what that “user-created content” will be. In the case of Rigopulos, he believes the Rock Band Network and its potentially “huge community of power-users — skilled music creators” will be his company’s next “defining moment.” Bright is less sure of a plan, simply stating, “I think the key is to create music, but make it compelling to create, so the game is in the creation.”

Kotick: Activision ’sticking with’ DJ Hero franchise

January 18, 2010 by admin · Comment

f36af_djherocontroller_120109 Kotick: Activision sticking with DJ Hero franchiseWe know that Activision is planning a second DJ Hero game — thanks to David Guetta and word that Activision is looking for some new talent. Now we’ve heard confirmation of the game from the same source that semi-officially revealed the first game: Activision CEO Bobby Kotick.

Kotick justified the development of a sequel to the less-than-hit music game in an interview with Game Informer. “I think DJ Hero is a really innovative product,” he said. “I can’t wait for you to see next year’s. That’s the thing; we’re sticking with it. We’ll stick with it and get it right. But it’s going to be less games, better games. That’s our strategy.”

That’s right — somehow, Kotick managed to use an annual DJ Hero sequel as proof of a “less games, better games” strategy. We suppose it is noteworthy that Activision’s only doing one DJ Hero this year, given that 2009 saw six Guitar Hero games.

The Beatles: Rock Band does 1.7M as music games continue slide

Sales of the latest Rock Band game seem to be fueled less by Beatlemania and more by Beatlemildinterest. According to the L.A. Times, the NPD estimates that The Beatles: Rock Band moved 357,000 units in December, for a total of 1.18 million in the U.S. Worldwide, the game has sold 1.7 million, the same amount Rock Band 2 sold in the U.S. alone during its first four months. A spokesperson for MTV Games said the company was pleased with the holiday sales, though “some European markets performed below the company’s expectations.”

It’s not terribly encouraging, but perhaps EA should be happy the news isn’t worse: According to the NPD, the music genre is down 46% year-over-year to $1.06 billion. Though rock may be its stock-in-trade, it seems like music games spent most of 2009 singing the blues.

Pen tapping along with the Super Mario song

“Clicking out beats to the Mario tunes with disposable pens” sounds a lot less impressive and awesome than this video actually is, so you might as well go ahead and check the video after the break to watch for yourself. We can’t help think that Shane has better things to do, but this is what the kids are up to nowadays, we guess. No more useless than pogs were back in the nineties, and a lot cheaper to boot.

A better question might be: Where can we get that T-shirt? Our extensive Google-searching turned up lots of great Mario shirts, but we couldn’t find that one for sale. If you see it online, let us know in the comments below.

Hudson’s ‘Master Higgins’ sings on new game music CD

bdaa4_meijin10410 Hudsons Master Higgins sings on new game music CDFor some of us, the latest game music remix album release from Hudson is going to be a bizarre retrogaming oddity. But for a few — those who love Hudson classics and also idolize Takahashi Meijin, the Hudson PR executive who became famous for his ability to push a button 16 times a second, and who served as the model for Adventure Island’s protagonist, Takahashi Meijin Legend: Soul of the 16 Shot — is instantly going to become one of the year’s most anticipated music releases. And a bizarre retrogaming oddity.

Soul of the 16 Shot features the Meijin singing, auto-tuned, over new arrangements of the music from classic Star Soldier, Challenger and Milon’s Secret Castle. It’ll be available on CD and in the Japanese iTunes store January 27. After hearing the new interpretation of the Adventure Island music, we’re going to hope really hard that it shows up in the US iTunes store as well. Listen to some preview tracks after the break!

Man rocks us to the core with a Koopa Troopa electric guitar

75d04_gam_koopatroopageetar_580 Man rocks us to the core with a Koopa Troopa electric guitar

We were just about to label 2009 the “Worst Year Ever in the History of Time,” but … but then this happened. From the depths of Reddit come a quintet of images of an unnamed musical engineer’s latest project: An electric guitar shaped like a Koopa Troopa. We’re so glad these pictures exist, because we’re not sure our mind’s eye could imagine something as fantastical as “an electric guitar shaped like a Koopa Troopa” without some sort of visual aid.

Check out the Reddit entry to see the fruits of this unnamed magician’s labor. Whoever you are, if you’re reading this, please send a video of you playing this thing. Ideally to Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper.”
