ecd2c_re5gold226 RE5 Gold tops Japanese charts; Heavy Rain floods top tenEven without the PlayStation Motion Controller to back it up, Resident Evil 5 has struck gold for a second time. The PS3 version of Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition (Alternative Edition in Japan) hit the top of the Media Create sales chart in Japan following its February 18 release, selling 143,339 copies. God Eater continues to gobble up attention, taking the #2 spot with 64,192 units sold (while passing 500k units sold to date).

Another big PS3 game also debuted in the top ten this week: Heavy Rain, which fell in at #6, selling 26,775 copies. In a way, the Japanese version is the superior release, because the voice acting doesn’t seem to have been performed by French people faking Japanese accents. See the full top ten after the break.

Namco Bandai recalls buggy Tales of Graces

d4da5_graces223 Namco Bandai recalls buggy Tales of GracesNamco Bandai has issued a recall notice for copies of Tales of Graces, the Wii Tales RPG released in Japan on December 10. In the announcement, the publisher listed all of the bugs it hopes to address with replacement discs, mostly occurring in “New Game +” replays. Apparently, certain enemies, team conversations, and even key items may not appear in subsequent playthroughs. In addition, bugs in shops can randomly change the types and numbers of items in player possession, and pausing during cutscenes may result in other item glitches.

Namco promises that all of these issues will be addressed in the updated discs, and that players’ save files will remain compatible. Users need only send in their discs, and not the whole Wii bundle.

Dragon Ball Origins 2 flying to DS on a cloud this summer

If, like us, you were surprised by how much fun Dragon Ball: Origins for DS was, prepare to be delighted once again. Namco Bandai announced that it is publishing Dragon Ball: Origins 2 in North America, with a summer release in mind.

The sequel features the same kind of Phantom Hourglass-esque, stylus-controlled action, with the option to switch to buttons. This time, a two-player co-op mode is included, so Goku and a non-Goku friend can beat up the Red Ribbon Army over local wireless. The Japanese release also includes an emulated version of what we know as the NES’s Dragon Power — there’s currently no word if that awful game will be a bonus in the American version.

Wii and DS versions of Ivy the Kiwi? revealed

21617_ivy2410 Wii and DS versions of Ivy the Kiwi? revealedPrope and publisher Bandai Namco sent out the first screens and footage (after the break) of the new Wii and DS versions of the once-Windows Mobile exclusive Ivy the Kiwi?, thus forcing us to fill another post with question marks? Okay, we didn’t need that one.

The presentation on the console versions of the game is identical to the original, with the unusual sepia-tone color scheme and hand-drawn backgrounds. Both new versions double the number of levels, bringing the game up to a total of 100. And both new versions have multiplayer: local download play on DS and splitscreen on Wii. And, of course, the DS has a map screen. Why not?

Muscle March crashing into North America next week

WiiWare’s been pretty good lately, but it’s really lacking in … musclebound, Speedoed dudes busting through walls. Have you noticed that? Thankfully, Namco Bandai noticed that as well, and is stepping in to help out, having announced that its WiiWare game Muscle March will be available on WiiWare next Monday, January 18.

The best part? The publisher dropped the price by 300 Wii Points in the move from Japan to America, meaning we’ll be able to download it for just 500 points! That’s definitely in impulse-buy territory, which is where it belongs. Too bad Nintendo’s point purchase system isn’t really friendly to impulse buys. But hey, if you’ve still got 500 points on your Wii, you’re all set!

When we encoded the new trailer Namco sent along with the announcement, it somehow ended up both upside down and backwards. We figure it’s not going to make much less sense this way than it would in the correct orientation. If you want, you can see it right side up after the break.

Best of the Rest: JC’s picks of 2009

a06c5_muramasabotrjc Best of the Rest: JCs picks of 2009Muramasa: The Demon Blade
Muramasa appealed to me in a way that Odin Sphere didn’t, thanks to an emphasis on combo-heavy sword action instead of planting and whatever. And the RPG elements that are left, like the sword upgrades and cooking, are not only fun, but simple enough that I can get right back into the game after a long break and still know what is going on.

Also, I don’t mean to be shallow, but the fact that Muramasa is the most beautiful game of 2009 helps me be positive about it.

Sky Crawlers release date crawls back a week

740b6_skycrawlers1218 Sky Crawlers release date crawls back a weekDid we say January 5? You’re actually going to have to wait a little longer for The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces on Wii. XSEED has informed us of a new release date for the Project Aces-developed flight game: just one week later, on January 12, 2010 [edit: Corrected the date.]

While that might not be the best news, the publisher also let us know the MSRP for the game: just $29.99. That’s going to make it a lot easier for curious gamers to find room in the crowded Q1 for this somewhat niche game.

Tales of Graces bundle is underwhelming

f8003_tog11232 Tales of Graces bundle is underwhelmingGame Watch has posted an image of the full contents of the Japanese Tales of Graces bundle, revealing … that it’s pretty much the least remarkable Wii bundle yet. The included Wii hardware is the plain white model, and the Classic Controller Pro (also white) doesn’t have any fancy design on it. It’s just a Wii, and a Classic Controller Pro, and the game. In a box. The box looks pretty cool, we suppose. And it’s not like we have the Classic Controller Pro here at all.

New screens show off the rather silly swimsuit costumes that can be equipped in-game, including a delightful Speedo and life vest outfit for Malik. More dignified: a costume based on a stage outfit worn by singer BoA, available as a bonus with a “Tales of Graces Edition” release of BoA’s single “Mamoritai ~ White Wishes ~.”

Sky Crawlers landing in Europe this February

58e1f_skycrawlers1119 Sky Crawlers landing in Europe this FebruaryNamco Bandai declined to publish The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces in North America, licensing the game out to XSEED instead. However, the company is handling the game itself for the European release, due in February. The game is a flight action game developed by Ace Combat dev Project Aces, and based on both the novel and the Mamoru Ishii-directed anime film of the same name.

In addition to the game, the movie is planned for a DVD and Blu-Ray release in PAL territories at an unspecified future date (”coming soon”). That seems like a good idea — licensed games probably work better when people know what the source material is.
