Well … we’re going to have to keep waiting. While Nintendo didn’t announce a date for the RPG at the Nintendo Media Summit today, the company announced that it will not only co-market Dragon Quest IX, it will publish it in North America. This is the first official confirmation of a localized release.

Square Enix previously said that it would consider localizing DQIX in its next fiscal year (beginning in April). Our best guess is to expect Dragon Quest IX later this year.

Level-5 considers opening US office

286df_level521010-1265812048 Level-5 considers opening US officeDuring the same event in which Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino teased new Wii and PS3 games, he also suggested that the company may be setting up operations in the US. According to our own imperfect translation of 4Gamer’s summary of statements, “Mr. Hino, in order to release software overseas, spoke about a plan to establish a new company in America,” describing his intention to expand the company’s activities from its current home of Fukuoka to the world.

This new enterprise would be the second new office opened by the company for this purpose — it recently established an overseas-focused office in Tokyo. Perhaps we’ll see self-published Level-5 games soon. Perhaps that way we can get timely Professor Layton releases!

Level-5 opens new Tokyo office for ‘overseas business’

aa020_level5logo Level-5 opens new Tokyo office for overseas businessProfessor Layton, White Knight Chronicles, and Dragon Quest IX developer Level-5 is expanding from its Fukuoka, Japan base, founding a new office in Tokyo focused on its ROID mobile gaming platform, overseas business, and “new enterprises.” The move could portend worldwide release of the developer’s mobile games, or even expansion of its publishing business.

In Japan, Level-5 publishes the Layton series, Inazuma Eleven, and other titles independently. If a localized Inazuma Eleven is indeed on the way, Level-5 could be looking to start up its publishing business outside of Japan with that title. Or, less spectacularly, we suppose the new office could be tasked with localization of games and dealing with Western publishers.

Magazine publishers said to be ‘very close’ to digital distribution deal

1f7fa_magazine-pubs-11-24-09 Magazine publishers said to be very close to digital distribution dealRumors of magazine publishers striking a deal to make their content available for digital devices — even a certain tablet — have been around for quite a while now, but it looks like something may finally be close to really happening. As The New York Observer reports, Time Inc. exec John Squires has been taking the lead on the initiative (and is apparently set to become interim head of the new company), which would see rival publishers including Time, Condé Nast and Hearst join together to make over 50 magazines available in digital form, and for a variety of devices. Details are otherwise a bit light, as you might expect, but one source familiar with the situation reportedly says “it’s very close and more imminent than it’s been,” while others familiar with the plans say they “compare to iTunes,” and that you’ll be able to buy “new and distinct iterations” of magazines like of The New Yorker or Time — and even actual print editions, for that matter.

Fatal Frame IV unlikely to scare up American release

Since first whispered eerily in our ears, we’ve been eager to have our pants scared off by the Tecmo/Grasshopper Manufacture collaboration, Fatal Frame IV. Now it seems like our slacks will be staying firmly buttoned. While Nintendo published the Wii-exclusive in Japan, the company has no intention of making a repeat performance stateside with Nintendo boss Reggie Fils-Aime telling MTV, “We are not the publisher of that title in the Americas.”

A Tecmo spokesperson put the lens cap on the scary sequel, telling IGN that Nintendo of America still holds the publishing rights, and its decision to not release the game means “the title will not be released in this territory.”

Read Tecmo’s official statement: “As the owner of the IP, Tecmo feels very unfortunate that the fans of the series in North America will not have a chance to play the game, but respects the final decision made by Nintendo of America.” If you could take a picture of our faces right now you’d see our jaws on the floor at bearing witness to Nintendo’s own unique brand of horror.
