Picross 3D shaping up for May 3 release
If you’ve been looking for a way to tease your brain into an overloaded, catatonic state while on the go, Nintendo and HAL Laboratory will soon deliver an application that should aid in your endeavor. Picross 3D, the DS puzzle game that hit Japanese retail last March, will be released on May 3 in North America.
The announcement came during today’s Nintendo Media Summit and added that the game would receive DLC in the form of extra puzzles, à la Professor Layton. With continued support like that, Picross 3D could be capable of frying our brains for the foreseeable future. We can’t wait.

Mouse House squeaks onto WiiWare Feb. 22
Big John Games has announced a new 2D puzzler coming to WiiWare: Mouse House; a single-screen maze game in which an adorably spheroid mouse navigates mazes full of obstacles and other mice in order to feast on delicious cheese. Though the presentation is totally “Flash game,” the gameplay reminds us of Adventures of Lolo, Kickle Cubicle and other character-based NES puzzle games. (Not that we’re suggesting Mouse House is that caliber of game.)
We’ll find out soon enough how good it is. Mouse House’s release is set for Monday, February 22.

Wii and DS versions of Ivy the Kiwi? revealed
Prope and publisher Bandai Namco sent out the first screens and footage (after the break) of the new Wii and DS versions of the once-Windows Mobile exclusive Ivy the Kiwi?, thus forcing us to fill another post with question marks? Okay, we didn’t need that one.
The presentation on the console versions of the game is identical to the original, with the unusual sepia-tone color scheme and hand-drawn backgrounds. Both new versions double the number of levels, bringing the game up to a total of 100. And both new versions have multiplayer: local download play on DS and splitscreen on Wii. And, of course, the DS has a map screen. Why not?

Natsume’s Squishy Tank and Cheer We Go available on DS in March
There’s bound to be someone else out there waiting for news about Natsume’s super-cute artillery puzzle game Squishy Tank, because we know we are. Natsume just announced that both that puzzler and Cheer We Go will be released in March, which is … unfortunately, so overloaded that these games are likely to founder in even deeper obscurity than they would anyway.
Squishy Tank, based on a series of Japanese Flash animations, is a color-matching game with soft, animate tank characters and adorable parody minigames. Cheer We Go is a rhythm-based game in which the player revitalizes a failed town, home to terrible sports teams and widespread despair, with cheerleading! The games will retail for $20 each.

Rumor: Picross 3D in Europe this February
Picross 3D for DS was one of the titles announced by Nintendo at E3, but not dated or mentioned again, like Line Attack Heroes, Monado: The End of the World, and, until recently, WarioWare DIY. According to posts on Cubed3 and NeoGAF, the puzzler will be out on February 5 — in Europe. Though Nintendo UK still lists the date as “TBA”, Cubed3 reports that Nintendo has confirmed the February 5 date.
Picross 3D, developed by HAL Laboratory, is based on the familiar Picross puzzle, in which players make marks in squares based on clues about how many in each row or column should be numbered. But Picross 3D starts with cubes instead of squares, with each mark chipping away at the cube to reveal a voxel-based 3D object.
There is no release date, rumored or otherwise, for North America, though the game was announced for release here.

Snap Judgment: Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes
Having received my copy yesterday, I’ve only been able to put a few hours into Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes for DS. However, I can already tell that it’s going to become an obsession, at the expense of things like other games and interacting with my family. Critter Crunch developer Capy has created an incredibly engrossing game that melds the best aspects of both strategy RPGs and puzzle games.

Puzzle Quest 2 coming to DS, XBLA in Spring 2010
Though we’re confident Infinite Interactive’s Puzzle Quest 2 will eventually be a mega-multiplatform release like its predecessor, D3Publisher announced that the game’s roll-out will start on DS and Xbox Live Arcade. It’ll be out in spring 2010, along with every other game you’ve ever heard of, which means that you’ll now have the choice to play all those games or Puzzle Quest. They’ll occupy about the same amount of time.
Puzzle Quest 2 will let players match gems as one of four new character classes: War Mage, Inquisitor, Barbarian, or Assassin, using “all-new weapons, spells, and shields.” Sorry if you just got over a Puzzle Quest addiction.

Level-5 reveals Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, coming to Japan next fall
Professor Layton and the Devil’s Flute is out in Japan tomorrow, so Level-5 decided it was an appropriate time to go ahead and announce the next DS game in the second Layton trilogy. At a Devil’s Flute launch event, Level-5 president Akihiro Hino revealed the above artwork for Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask.
This fifth game has Layton and Luke investigating the mystery of the title artifact in Casino City, which seems to have been created by the wish-granting mask. According to a Famitsu report that leaked before the official reveal, there could be major changes to the familiar gameplay system.
Miracle Mask will be out in fall 2010, and may be followed by a second movie, Hino said. The company first has to solve the puzzle of how much money it will receive from the first one.

Professor Layton and the sinister graffiti
We were going to comment on the creepy “sign of the witch” that Professor Layton, Remi and young Luke encounter in this screenshot of Professor Layton and the Devil’s Flute — and how it seems that this Layton game is going in an unusually spooky and dark direction — but then we remembered that both of the Layton games out in North America contain some fairly scary supernatural-seeming content: mysterious murders, monsters, curses, and the like.
We of the Layton games as so pleasant and so light-hearted, but, really, there’s often something a bit sinister in many of the puzzles Layton must solve. Grab a cup of tea and head to Famitsu for more totally spooky screens.

Ghost Trick returns to haunt us with new trailer
Capcom’s Ghost Trick was one of the most memorable games of TGS (in our opinion), combining a novel puzzle mechanic with a memorable style. We’ve been eagerly awaiting any new information or media that may (Ghost) trickle out, and now we’ve got a new-ish trailer to share for the 2010 release.
We say new-ish because it features the same intro animation seen in the TGS trailer. But this extended video also has brief snippets of gameplay footage, in which we can see Sissel possessing and “tricking” things like a cabinet door (to make a dog move). Check out the trailer after the break.
