Collect some Mega Man Zero Collection screens and art

7ce7c_mmzcart222 Collect some Mega Man Zero Collection screens and artCapcom passed along some screens and artwork of its upcoming Mega Man Zero Collection for DS, though the screens look suspiciously singular. Essentially, these are screenshots of the Game Boy Advance originals, without the DS’s second screen. But since the screens focus on the important bit (the actual games), and because many people interested in this collection probably haven’t been exposed to the original games, we’re posting them anyway.

As a nice bonus, Capcom also sent out artwork featuring Zero looking pretty freaking cool. Mega Man Zero Collection arrives in stores early this summer.

Interplay resurrecting Stonekeep on WiiWare

dfa43_stonekeep11210 Interplay resurrecting Stonekeep on WiiWareRemember Stonekeep? If so, you’re going to be delighted and vaguely confused by this news! If you don’t remember the game, you’ll just be vaguely confused. Interplay (remember Interplay) just announced that it’s reviving the 15-year-old PC RPG franchise for … WiiWare! And if you kind of remember Stonekeep and want a refresher, you can get it for $6 from GOGthen come back and experience some confusion:

Rather than a port, Alpine Studios is concocting a new game based on the original, with “fun, a little fear and many exciting moments to all family members who dare to seek their fortunes and rid Stonekeep´s dungeons and corridors of evil using the Wii Remote controller,” according to Alpine founder Les Pardew.

We’ll find out what this means sometime before the Q3 2010 release. Will Alpine really come up with a casual, family-friendly concept based on … first-person dungeon RPGs? It’s hard to imagine a less casual-oriented genre.

34277_pokedex12092 Pokemon remake screens, now in EnglishONM has posted the first English screens of Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, coming to North America and Europe in spring 2010. The site highlights the newly redesigned Pokedex, which comes in both red and pink, and enables touchscreen-based obsessive browsing of your collection. Also visible: your starter Pokemon, who now follows you around like Pikachu in Pokémon Yellow.

There’s still no mention of the PokeWalker accessory, unfortunately, making it increasingly likely that the Pokemon-training pedometer will be left out of the Western release.

Lufia II remake is more action, less RPG

November 25, 2009 by admin · Comment

The Lufia series always had the stereotypical spiky-haired protagonists, but now that the Lufia II characters appear in 3D in Square Enix’s DS remake, they look even more Square Enixy. Not that it’s a bad thing: the cinematics in this debut trailer look really nice, with a somewhat cel-shaded effect, and the in-game action is also nice-looking, as far as DS 3D goes.

The game itself looks really different. Square Enix classifies this as an action RPG, but between the combos and the grappling, this looks like an action game. We suppose it’s an RPG because when you hit something, numbers come out. Lufia II (or Estpolis) is out in Japan February 25.

Dragon Quest VI arrives in Japan in January

f6ef2_dq61111 Dragon Quest VI arrives in Japan in JanuarySquare Enix is planning to start 2010 off right in Japan: by selling a Dragon Quest game. The publisher announced that Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Reverie, the last of the planned DS remakes, will be out in Japan on January 28, just over a month after another big RPG franchise release. We can now attempt a guess at when the North American release will take place, given the release dates of the last two games.

Dragon Quest IV came out in Japan in November 2007, and then in America in September 2008 — ten months apart. Dragon Quest V was released in July 2008 in Japan, and February 2009 in North America, just seven months apart. Therefore, Dragon Quest VI will probably be released in America in … spring 2010. That’s when every game is coming out.

Yes, Excitebike World Rally has some motion control

705ff_excitebike1028 Yes, Excitebike World Rally has some motion controlWait! Come back! The motion controls sound okay! We know that you’re already groaning about the potential ruin of an NES classic with unwarranted waggle, but according to 1UP’s preview of Excitebike: World Rally, the limited Wiimote motion sensing added to the traditional Excitebike control scheme actually improves the game.

You still move with the D-pad and accelerate with a button, but you can now tilt the Wiimote to lean your rider and “affect the pitch of your bike.” “Jumping was always the trickiest part of Excitebike,” 1UP’s Jeremy Parish notes, “and the analog smoothness of the motion controls makes it intuitive — it became second nature before the end of the first track.”

We’re curious enough about this sensible-sounding innovation that we’ll delay throwing our controllers down in disgust. For now.

Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth arises in scans

166af_vania1014 Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth arises in scansThough Konami still has yet to officially announce Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth for WiiWare, the title has shown up on the ESRB’s database, Nintendo’s release calendar and now in Famitsu … with full release details. We’re going to go ahead and call “case closed” on this one.

As the name suggests, the new game is a “concept remake” of Castlevania: The Adventure for Game Boy; a game that desperately needed to be remade. ReBirth will have new enemies and altered level designs — most notably, stairs have been implemented to replace the ropes from the Game Boy game. It’ll also have new arrangements of classic Castlevania music. Like the other ReBirth games, this one is going for a faithful 16-bit look.

ReBirth will be out in Japan on October 27 for 1,000 Wii Points. Nintendo’s calendar gave it a “Q3 2009″ date for North America, so it could be out here by Halloween as well!

Dragon Quest VI: Screens of Reverie

aa51e_dq61007 Dragon Quest VI: Screens of ReverieAt Tokyo Game Show 2009, Square Enix showed off the last in its trilogy of announced DS Dragon Quest remakes, Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Reverie, and now Famitsu has some new screens of the RPG. Unsurprisingly, it looks, graphically, just like the other two DS Dragon Quest remakes, also developed by Artepiazza.

So why is it exciting? Well, for one thing, Dragon Quest games tend to be good. But most importantly, like Dragon Quest V, the Super Famicom version of Realms of Reverie never left Japan, and this DS version has already been announced for localization. North America will then finally have the whole numbered Dragon Quest series. Well, except for IX, but we can also be pretty sure that’s coming.

ESRB rates Castlevania the Adventure ReBirth for Wii

b6164_gam_castlevaniagb_580 ESRB rates Castlevania the Adventure ReBirth for Wii

It’s been over a year since we last heard rumors of a re-Vamped Castlevania installment on the WiiWare service — now, a new ESRB listing has rekindled the flames of conjecture. The board recently gave a Teen rating to Castlevania the Adventure ReBirth for the Wii — as you may have noticed, it shares the suffix applied to the similarly renovated Gradius ReBirth and Contra ReBirth, both of which surfaced on Nintendo’s download platform this year.

According to the ESRB rating, the game will finally deliver the “side-scrolling action” which classic ‘Vania fans have been clamoring for. If it’s based off the Game Boy title of the same name, our only request is that they smooth out the game’s unscalable difficulty curve. To this day, we’re not sure that game has a second level.

Minor graphical effects missing in Wii Metroid Prime

September 7, 2009 by admin · Comment

f3616_mpt0907 Minor graphical effects missing in Wii Metroid PrimeIt turns out the word “damn” isn’t the only thing missing from Metroid Prime Trilogy. This YouTube video (after the break) demonstrates a few minor, but nice, graphical effects that seem to have been excised from the Wii release of the first Metroid Prime — specifically, the ripple effect when Samus moves around in water, and the Ice Beam’s freezing condensation, which used to gather around the gun when charging Ice Beam shots.

At first we thought the effects might have been a casualty of the process of cramming three games onto one disc, but this video shows that the Japanese version of Prime on Wii, which had a Wii disc all to itself, also lacks the freezing effect (skip to the last thirty seconds to see). So what happened? It could merely be a glitch, or the result of a hasty port. It’s certainly nothing to get too upset or burn your Trilogy disc over. Just kind of … odd.
