Nintendo to Greenpeace: We do care about the environment

Greenpeace harshed on Nintendo’s eco-coolness last week, and this week the House that Miyamoto Built is firing back. It’s released a statement to Gamasutra saying that it takes environmental responsibilities seriously, and that the company is committed to saving energy, making both of its consoles energy efficient and using carefully picked and clearly-labeled materials in an effort to make post-usage recycling easy.

To be fair to Nintendo, most of Greenpeace’s argument against it was that the company didn’t share information about what it did for the environment, and let’s be honest here: Nintendo’s not really one for sharing. While Nintendo did get blamed for increasing its CO2 emissions, most of Greenpeace’s other complaints (as you can see in the PDF) were not actually about mistakes Nintendo was making, but its failure to share information or release reports about its operations. We can’t really blame Nintendo for that — on at least a few of its points, it seems Greenpeace’s methodology was more responsible for the big N’s bottom-of-the-barrel listing.

Report: Nintendo most reputable game company, sixth overall

13f65_nintendologogrey_580 Report: Nintendo most reputable game company, sixth overall

Maybe it’s the portly plumber, or the kid in the green tunic, but there’s something about Nintendo that makes it one of the most memorable companies in the world. According to the Reputation Institute’s annual survey (via Forbes), Nintendo is not only the most reputable company in the games business, but actually sixth overall, just behind other big names such as Ikea and Johnson & Johnson. In fact, Nintendo is the only game company in the top 200 period.

Nintendo has the success of the Wii and DS to thank for that, as it has undoubtedly helped shape the company’s perception by invading more households than a famished Hamburglar.

Nielsen: Wii audience is youngest, PS3 audience is oldest

402ce_nielsen_consoles_580 Nielsen: Wii audience is youngest, PS3 audience is oldest

According to a recent console usage report compiled between October and December of last year by Nielsen Media Research, the Wii appeals to quite the broad spectrum of people, being especially popular among boys age 6 -11 and women age 25 - 34. Most interesting is the Wii’s ability to captivate the older women audience, as the console’s use by women over 35 is much higher than that of the Wii’s competition. And they’re apparently playing Wii Fit, Guitar Hero and Rock Band, games cited as favorites among that group.

Of course, as much as the younger audience and older women flock to Wii, it still has trouble captivating that coveted 18 - 24 demographic, where the Xbox 360 and PS3 fare a lot better. For Microsoft’s Xbox 360, the group getting their game on the most is males aged 12-17, and females aged 25-34. The PS3, it would seem, has the oldest male audience locked down, as the report notes that gamers who may have owned a PSOne or PS2 in the past “may have ‘graduated’ to the PS3 in their assumed adulthood.” For both males and females, the highest usage came from the 18 - 24 group.

As far as average playtime, the Wii trailed behind the others. On the Xbox 360 side, males used the console almost twice as much as females (10.2 vs. 5.4 in December), whereas usage between genders on the PS3 and Wii was much more balanced.

1e4e4_wii_family_time_lg Report finds British families game together, Wii very popular

A recent report conducted in Britain by research firm Deloitte says that the average Brit spends about 6.6 hours a week playing video games. As part of that report, Deloitte also found that a quarter of the individuals who were polled owned a Wii, with another quarter stating that they intend to own one in 2009. It’s no surprise, if you’ve been keeping up with sales figures.

Another aspect of the report that is quite interesting is the perception of gaming overall. Apparently, video games are considered part of “family time” over there for those between the ages of 26 and 42. It warms our heart to think of all the families getting along splendidly, enjoying gaming together.

How many of you enjoy gaming with your family? What games do you all play together? Is gaming your main hobby?

00756_play_wii_serious_business_lg Report: Gaming to reign supreme in the UK

When it comes to the UK, we really only know one person. So we’ve just assumed for the longest time that gaming was the bee’s knees in the country. Turns out that folks living there have enjoyed other forms of entertainment for a long time. They’re all starting to come around now, thankfully.

According to a report conducted by Verdict Research, gaming is poised to be the top form of entertainment there for the first time ever this year. The projections for sales figures show the games industry earning 4.64 billion pounds, compared to the 4.46 billion pounds the music and video industry is expected to generate. We wonder how much of that is thanks to the Wii?

So, UK readers, does this surprise you? Is gaming a big thing with your inner circle, or has gaming only recently become the activity of choice? How much of your own cash do you think is in that 4.64 billion pound figure?
