Heavy Rain buoyed to top of UK sales charts
Consumers in the UK poured out the pounds for PS3’s Heavy Rain last week, according to Chart-Track’s all-formats chart. The adventure game took the hill from Aliens vs. Predator, which slipped down one spot. Meanwhile, Just Dance kept doing its cha-cha of endurance and took third.
Nintendo’s Wii Fit Plus got a second wind (or a big shipment to the region) and overtook Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 after moving up five spots and into fourth. Finally, Napoleon: Total War marched in at #12 while White Knight Chronicles began its quest at #35.

RE5 Gold tops Japanese charts; Heavy Rain floods top ten
Even without the PlayStation Motion Controller to back it up, Resident Evil 5 has struck gold for a second time. The PS3 version of Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition (Alternative Edition in Japan) hit the top of the Media Create sales chart in Japan following its February 18 release, selling 143,339 copies. God Eater continues to gobble up attention, taking the #2 spot with 64,192 units sold (while passing 500k units sold to date).
Another big PS3 game also debuted in the top ten this week: Heavy Rain, which fell in at #6, selling 26,775 copies. In a way, the Japanese version is the superior release, because the voice acting doesn’t seem to have been performed by French people faking Japanese accents. See the full top ten after the break.

Scribblenauts was the #5 DS game of 2009
In its “NPD: Behind the Numbers” feature for January, Gamasutra included a chart of the top five DS games in the US for 2009. As expected, the list is dominated by Nintendo’s evergreen first-party lineup; however, at number five was a third-party title, 5th Cell’s Scribblenauts. WB announced earlier this month that the bizarre adventure puzzle game shipped over a million copies. It sold “over 900k for sure,” 5th Cell creative director Jeremiah Slaczka told Joystiq.
“The DS is a very different market than console, I think treating it as such helps,” Slaczka said about cracking the DS market. “I think it’s one of the toughest markets to sell on because the demographic is so broad: gamers, non-gamers, kids, adults, boys, girls. And unlike the Wii, it’s even more limiting in power. Making a game that appeals to everyone is tough.” And that kind of universal appeal is exactly what 5th Cell went for with Scribblenauts — an approach that put them in some pretty exclusive company.

EEDAR: No More Heroes 2 sold less than 30k in January
It’s sad to admit it, but we never expect any third-party “core” Wii game to sell well — regardless of its quality or the hype behind it. Lowered expectations mean that when such a title doesn’t absolutely tank, it’s great news! And the sales of No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle, as reported by EEDAR in its “Retail Sales Review for January,” fall somewhere in that “didn’t absolutely tank” area, especially since the game was on sale for less than a week in January. (There’s certainly room for a few more people to go out and pick it up, though.)
“No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle has scored top reviews averaging a 90 (out of 100) since its release,” EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich said in the EEDAR report. “However, sales came less than 30,000 units for its first week (January 26, 2010 release).” Divinich compared the lowish sales to Dead Space Extraction and MadWorld, both of which also had “low marketing budgets, which is likely the wrong strategy to use when attempting to target the Wii consumer, even if you are targeting the ‘core’ market.” When is that ever the right strategy?

January NPD: Mass Effect 2 debuts at #2, hardware is down

Sure, last month’s NPD numbers post had all sorts of green arrows plastered all about its form — this month, we knew things would go down. Little known fact: Christmas never occurs in January, and this year is no exception. Without Consumermas driving console adoption, numbers were down across the board; what’s not so obvious is that numbers were also down year-over-year. That means that overall sales are down 13 percent since last January, way back in ought nine.
Nintendo’s consoles lost the most in sales, with the Wii dropping a hefty 88 percent; however, that still wasn’t enough to knock the white wonder from its top spot. The Xbox 360 and PS3 continue their back-and-forth battle, with the Xbox reclaiming its number three spot again, having just reclaimed it in November. A good reason for the Xbox’s “victory”: the not-available-on-PS3 Mass Effect 2, which pushed an impressive 572,000 units in the six short days following its January 26 release. That still wasn’t enough to dethrone New Super Mario Bros. Wii, though, which moved 657,000 units with a full month of sales propelling it.
Beyond Mass Effect 2, the bottom of the software sales list is made up of similar newcomers: Army of Two: The 40th Day in 8th, Just Dance in 9th place, and Darksiders just making the cut. Really, universe? Just Dance made the top ten while the excellent MAG is nowhere to be found? Color us disappointed in all of you.
-Wii: 466K
3.34M (-88%)
-DS: 422K
2.89M (-80%)
-360: 333K
977K (-85%)
-PS3: 277K
1.08M (-75%)
-PSP: 100K
361K (-88%)
-PS2: 42K
291K (-87%)

Discounted: Brand new Tony Hawk Ride at … Goodwill?
It may seem at this point that we’re kicking an already downed and plenty insulted victim here, but we couldn’t help but note the shockingly low price of a Tony Hawk: Ride bundle — complete with board, unopened — discovered by Gamertell at an Arlington Heights, Il. Goodwill store. Two Wii versions of the game were on sale for just $74.99 (down from $119.99 MSRP) — a Goodwill employee said the game’s presence could be explained by donations from local retailers, listing Kohls, Sears, Borders, and Target as potential donators. Alright, alright, we’ll admit it — the price drop isn’t that steep, but a near $50 difference on a barely four-month-old game sounds pretty decent to us.
Presumably, one of the aforementioned retailers was more interested in the shelf space (and the tax write-off) than waiting for the game’s fairly cool sales to heat up. Either way, if you’re looking to get your … ahem … feet on the game, maybe your local Goodwill could offer a better deal than the other brick-and-mortars, eh?

Dragon Quest VI remake approaches 1m Japanese sales in first week
The debut of the Dragon Quest VI remake for DS proves that a Dragon Quest game doesn’t have to be entirely new to sell like crazy in Japan — just new enough. In its first week at retail, January 25-31, the new version of the classic Super Famicom RPG sold 906,458 copies, according to Media Create, making it by far the top-selling game of the week.
A pair of other newly-released RPGs also did quite well: the PS3 version of tri-Ace’s shooty-RPG End of Eternity (we call it “Resonance of Fate“) landed in second place on the weekly software chart with 118,088 units sold (the Xbox version charted respectably at #8, selling 27,048 units) and Ar Tonelico 3 hit #4 with 81,633 copies sold. Even the Japanese release of MAG managed to make it into the top ten!

Bayonetta moves 1.1m units in Sega fiscal Q3 2010 results
After surviving harrowing losses of ¥22.8 billion (nearly $254.8 million) during its fiscal year 2009, Sega Sammy Holdings (parent company to Sega, which you’ve probably sussed out) has managed to revive its faltering bottom line. According to the company’s latest financial report, Sega Sammy brought in a net income of ¥16.9 billion ($189.5 million) during the first nine months of its fiscal 2010 (April-December 2009).
This income came in spite of the fact that Sega’s total game sales had dropped 13 percent from the same 9-month period the previous fiscal year — however, thanks to the company’s massive restructuring last February, operating income skyrocketed to ¥28.8 billion (about $323 million), which more than softened the blow. The company’s highest-selling title was, alarmingly, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, with 5.6 million units sold (and probably counting). Bayonetta, which was only available in Japan (released October 29) during the period covered by the report, came in a distant second with 1.1 million units sold.
It looks like the company’s managed to recover from an extremely painful fiscal 2009 — at a cost.

Gameloft revenues increase 11% in 2009, 122 million (mostly) digital dollars made
Yep, it says it all right there in the headline, folks. Gameloft swiftly took $122 million from consumers in 2009, roughly equating to 15 million digital copies of DSiWare Oregon Trail. Alright, alright, the digital distribution-based publishers probably sold some of its other games too, we guess – mobile games (in general) represented a whopping 94 percent of the company’s sales in 2009. And despite our voracious habit for mobile games here at Joystiq, North Americans were second place in terms of worldwide sales at 32 percent, with Europeans leading at 39 percent and the rest of the world trailing at 27 percent. Good luck catching up, rest of the world!
And yes, even amidst the global economic recession, Gameloft predicted “further growth in 2010 in terms of revenue and profitability.” The publisher also pointed out its strong position in the long term, saying it will “benefit from the rapid emergence of digitally distributed video games on mobile phones, tablets, consoles, and from major technological innovations.” You catch that tablet reference in there? Yeah, we did too. Hey, it’s 2010, right? The future. We’re in it.
