Doki Doki Majo Shinpan hits the beach

ba8d0_dokimajo041509 Doki Doki Majo Shinpan hits the beachGreat news for — well, pervs! And also people like us who think skeezy DS games are hilarious. SNK Playmore’s infamous witch-touching adventure series, Doki Doki Majo Shinpan is returning this summer with an appropriately summery sequel. Doki Majo Plus includes unspecified “new scenarios” and “new systems,” as well as new characters like the demure Kanan Kiara. This time, the investigation takes place during an island vacation.

What hasn’t changed is the goal of the game: to find “witch marks” on the bodies of your classmates. And the fact that this series is as unlikely as ever to see release outside of Japan — which is probably okay. But before we condemn SNK for this stuff, keep in mind that this is what pays for those fancy new sprites in King of Fighters XII.

VC Monday Madness: Metal Slug 2

Metal Slug 2 (NEOGEO, 1 - 2 players, 900 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: do not download

This week, we’ve only got one new Virtual Console game to check out. But, thankfully, it’s a pretty good one. It might not be recommended to download (9 bucks, ouch), but you all should find a way to play it, because Metal Slug 2 is good. How about Metal Slug Anthology, which is under $20 at most places, including Amazon? Yeah, we suggest that.

If you’re looking for more retro goodness, check out Virtually Overlooked, which talks about games that should be on the Virtual Console.

VC Friday: A question of value

35c9a_msvcfridaycgmain99 VC Friday: A question of value

This week’s PAL Virtual Console line-up isn’t short on quality, but it represents fairly awful value. As dreamy as we find any Metal Slug title, there are cheaper ways to play all three of this week’s offerings.

Want Metal Slug 2? We’d recommend picking up this. Fancy having your delicate gamer’s ego rudely kicked in by Forgotten Worlds? There’s an excellent compilation out there for a bunch of platforms that costs peanuts and comes with another 20 or so games. If you can’t find Space Invaders for less than £6/€8, you’re probably reading the wrong website. Better still: lavish those points on Space Invaders Get Even!.

See videos of all three (including footage of one David Hinkle showing off his skillz at Space Invaders and Forgotten Worlds) after the break.

ESRB rates Metal Slug 2, A Boy and His Blob

According to two new ESRB listings, camel-riding run-and-gun sensation Metal Slug 2 and the fabulous A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia will be coming to the Virtual Console at some point in the future. Either that, or they’ll both hang around on that depressing list of games that get rated and never seem to come out. Feed your Blob a punch-flavored jelly bean to descend past the break and see some Metal Slug 2 footage!

Virtually Overlooked: Super Dodge Ball

239e1_superdodgebox0925 Virtually Overlooked: Super Dodge BallWe’re ridiculously crazy about Technos and their Kunio games. Normally, the release of any Kunio series game — save Renegade — on the Virtual Console would be cause for a weeklong celebration here on Wii Fanboy. We’d break out our special Kunio-shaped cake pans and observe the traditional Kunio Week rituals (playing games). We’d be pushing the game on you in unrelated posts, even.

Unfortunately for Super Dodge Ball, Mega Man 9 had to happen this week and distract everybody. In fact, we are also freaking out about Dodge Ball — we just delayed our reaction a bit. We’ll have our little nerdfest now, in the most counterintuitive way we can think of — celebrating the NES Super Dodge Ball by talking about another version.

9921b_dodgeballscreen10925 Virtually Overlooked: Super Dodge Ball

The Neo Geo Super Dodge Ball trades out the identically sized, identically dressed River City Ransom-style characters from previous games, and adds a wide variety of characters, all of whom look and dress in completely different styles. No longer does everyone have exactly the same body — the bigger dudes are huge, and the tiny characters are comparatively wispy. However, even the scrawniest of player is rendered in a generous, super-colorful, detailed sprite. Super Dodge Ball’s sprite style is like a chibi fighting game — Pocket Fighter or something — but with more guys on screen, of course. It’s even got that Art of Fighting zoom effect. The game has been moved to a theme park instead of a series of international courts, further enhancing the “color explosion” factor.

The gameplay is a bit more fighting-game-like, as well. Instead of running for a set time and then throwing, your characters’ super throws are activated by familiar Street Fighter controller movements. There’s even a Super Team Throw available when you’ve filled up a “POW” meter.

Maybe the biggest visual upgrade over the NES version is the fact that Super Dodge Ball on the Neo Geo isn’t flickery as hell. We love the NES game, but that thing is a mess of slowdown and flicker. We’ve grown to accept it, but … what if we didn’t have to?

Most Neo Geo games on the Virtual Console are massive deals at 900 Wii Points compared to what you’d have to pay for the cartridge, yes, but most of them are also available on compilations that make even the VC versions seem expensive. Super Dodge Ball is not available on any compilations. There seems to be only one copy on eBay right now, and the price is a lot more than $9. eBay is a bit more complicated than buying something on the Wii Shop Channel, as well. Maybe instead of releasing Metal Slug on Wii for the fourth time, SNK could coordinate with Aksys, who has the rights to Technos’s catalog.

Save those Wii Points: Samurai Shodown Anthology releases this winter

When we found out that Wii might see the release of SNK Arcade Classics, we got all kinds of tingly and warm inside. We like those old school SNK games. But when it was confirmed, along with Samurai Shodown Anthology and King of Fighters: The Orochi Saga, well, we had to lock ourselves in a padded room for hours just to get the excitement out. Now we have a release window for Samurai Shodown Anthology.

As you might have guessed, the title is due to hit shelves sometime this winter, meaning it could be available anywhere from now to December 31st. For those of you who aren’t in the know, Samurai Shodown Anthology will include 6 games from the classic fighter franchise and will probably be a little more than the cost of 2 SNK games on the Virtual Console.
