Space Invaders Extreme Z invades Japan’s DSiWare
Taito surprised us with a last-minute addition to the Japanese DSi Shop, and a rather awesome one at that: a modified downloadable version of Space Invaders Extreme 2! Space Invaders Extreme Z features three “courses” of increasing difficulty based on SIE2’s levels, playable in “score attack” and “time attack” modes.
Space Invaders Extreme Z is available on DSiWare now (in Japan only) for 500 DSi Points. It’s the first DSiWare game from Taito, who has released several WiiWare titles including Space Invaders Get Even, Bubble Bobble Plus, Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure! and Arkanoid Plus — all of which were released in North America.

VC/WiiWare Tuesday: Majora’s Mask arrives in another region
On one extreme, this week Japan’s Virtual Console offers one of the most technologically advanced games the service can support, on one of the first systems the Virtual Console emulated: The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask on N64. On the other extreme, it offers a game that happens to be ancient for the brand new Virtual Console Arcade service.
- The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (Nintendo 64, 1 player, 1,200 Wii Points)
- Space Invaders (Virtual Console Arcade, 1 player, 500 Wii Points)
As if Majora’s Mask weren’t enough, WiiWare is loaded with stuff, not all of which is Evasive Space! In fact, two welcome retro revivals make their debuts, hopefully hastening their arrival outside of Japan.
- Evasive Space (1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points)
- Adventure Island: The Beginning (1-2 players, 1,000 Wii Points)
- Puzzle Bobble Wii (1-2 players, 800 Wii Points)
- Minna de Puzzle Taisen Shanghai Wii (1-4 players, 800 Wii Points)

Majora’s Mask, Phantasy Star on Japanese Virtual Console in April
Wow! This has been a really great week to be a Nintendo fan. It’s been a really great week to be a Virtual Console fan in particular — when was the last time we could say something like that? The week has just gotten a lot better with the release of the list of upcoming Virtual Console releases for Japan.
Why? Two reasons. First: The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. Like Ocarina of Time, it costs a painful 1,200 Wii Points — and like Ocarina of Time, it will probably drop to the usual 1,000 in North America. Second, and possibly even more exciting: Phantasy Star! The Sega Master System RPG masterpiece is also coming to the Virtual Console. Maybe it’s not a big deal to those of you with Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection, but personally, it’s awesome news.
We fully expect to see both of these games in North America soon. Neither SMS games nor N64 games seem to take long to make it overseas. Also of interest: Hudson’s PC Engine port of the NES Ninja Gaiden. And the arcade version of Space Invaders, which marks the third time the “original” Space Invaders has been released on VC.
The full list is after the break.

VC/WiiWare Tuesday: Rainbow Islands!
Wow! Just a few weeks after the release of Bubble Bobble Wii, Taito just sneaked out a WiiWare version of its sequel, Rainbow Islands! As with Bubble Bobble, we knew that it was coming at some point, but we had yet to see any screens or gameplay information. Now it’s out, and it appears to feature timed ascents up huge, vertical stages. Also out this week: a WiiWare version of The Game of Life.
- Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure (1-2 players, 800 Wii Points)
- Madsecta (Onslaught) (1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points)
- Jinsei Game (1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points)
In other Taito news, today marks the release of the second version of Space Invaders: The Original Game on the Japanese Virtual Console. This time, the PC Engine version of the ancient shooter is being released — at exactly the same cost as the Super Famicom/SNES version, making the decision between the two basically a matter of platform preference. Unless silly anime-girl backgrounds make a big difference, in which case it’s PC Engine all the way.
- Dragon Slayer: Legend of Heroes II (Mega Drive, 1 player, 700 Wii Points)
- Space Invaders: The Original Game (PC Engine, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points)

Warning: Space Invaders Extreme 2 screens approaching
Finally! After NCSX pretty much confirmed its existence, Famitsu has come to our rescue with some new details and screens for Space Invaders Extreme 2. We know the game’s power-up system is getting the once-over and being fleshed out a bit more in the sequel, and that a Bingo Fever mode is being added. Considering how great the first game was, you can bet we’re extra excited about this.
Hit up Famitsu here to check out the screens and details. Or click here if you want the Japanese translated for you (badly).

VC Tuesday: Space Invaders Get Overturned
Filed under: Virtual Console, Imports, WiiWare
Nintendo of Japan has started off December the right way: with a bunch of video games. Between Virtual Console and WiiWare, an astounding six new (or new to Wii) games are available in Japan today. Of course, one of those games is Atlantis no Nazo, which was so bad, it was almost released as a sequel to Super Pitfall. The other, Space Invaders: Fukkatsu no Hi (Day of Resurrection) contains the original Invaders along with a “Plus” mode that adds new graphics and powerups. It’s also 200 points cheaper than the other version of original Space Invaders.
- Atlantis no Nazo (Famicom, 1 player, 500 Wii Points)
- Space Invaders: Fukkatsu no Hi (PC Engine, 1 player, 600 Wii Points)
The WiiWare game you’re most likely to care about is Overturn, the Balance Board-compatible, online robot fighting game. We like Yomikikase Asobi Wii, the interactive Momotarou storybook, but it’s got pretty tough competition from online robot fighting.
- Overturn (1-2 players, 800 Wii Points)
- Pit Crew Panic! (1-4 players, 500 Wii Points)
- Hamaru Billiards (1-2 players, 500 Wii Points)
- Yomikikase Asobi Wii (1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points)

Life Force, Nobunaga, more on Japanese VC in December
Filed under: Virtual Console, Imports
The Virtual Console offerings for Japan in December are fairly lean once again. It’s fairly depressing to see Nintendo of Japan adopting Nintendo of America’s stance toward the Virtual Console (that stance being “there probably don’t need to be many games on it.”) At least the ones coming out are reasonably interesting! Well, except for another Wonder Boy.
We’re definitely excited about Konami’s Salamander on the Famicom, because it means we may see the American version, Life Force, soon! One of the other Famicom releases, Atlantis no Nazo, is featured in the latest Famicom Dojo video.
Other interesting additions include Nobunaga’s Ambition on the Super Famicom (what a coincidence!) and a Taito platformer called Jigoku Meguri whose title translates to Tour of Hell. The full list is after the break!
Famicom
- Atlantis no Nazo
- Salamander
- Ninja-kun: Majou no Bouken
Super Famicom
- Super Nobunaga no Yabou: Zengoku Han
Master System
- Super Wonder Boy: Monster World
Mega Drive
- Earthworm Jim
PC Engine
- Space Invaders: Fukkatsu no Hi
- S.C.I.
- Jigoku Meguri
- Fire Pro Wrestling 3: Legend Bout

VC Friday: A question of value

This week’s PAL Virtual Console line-up isn’t short on quality, but it represents fairly awful value. As dreamy as we find any Metal Slug title, there are cheaper ways to play all three of this week’s offerings.
Want Metal Slug 2? We’d recommend picking up this. Fancy having your delicate gamer’s ego rudely kicked in by Forgotten Worlds? There’s an excellent compilation out there for a bunch of platforms that costs peanuts and comes with another 20 or so games. If you can’t find Space Invaders for less than £6/€8, you’re probably reading the wrong website. Better still: lavish those points on Space Invaders Get Even!.
- Metal Slug 2 — Neo Geo — 900 Wii Points
- Space Invaders: The Original Game — SNES — 800 Wii Points
- Forgotten Worlds — Mega Drive — 800 Wii Points
See videos of all three (including footage of one David Hinkle showing off his skillz at Space Invaders and Forgotten Worlds) after the break.

Space Invaders Get Even (with North America) Dec 1st
This Monday, those of us that weren’t lucky enough to already receive Space Invaders Get Even will finally be able to download this very awesome game. Square Enix dished out a press release stating as much, assuring those of us who’ve been biting our fingernails down to the bone whilst waiting for the game that our time is near. For 500 Wii Points, you can bet that we’ll be picking this one up.
So, who’s going to download this come December 1st? Have you read our review yet?

VC Monday Madness: Space Invaders and Forgotten Worlds
Filed under: VC Monday Madness
Oh, what, you thought you were off the hook this week? No way, as we’re here with our latest VC Monday Madness video. Late, but here nonetheless. This week, we’ve got two different games to download on the Virtual Console, so hit up the video above and then cruise past the break for the rest.

Space Invaders: The Original Game (SNES, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: do not download
So, all you’re really going to get here is the classic Space Invaders game. The original game is great, don’t get me wrong, but it’s hardly worth $8. Do yourself a favor and use that $8 towards a better version of the game, like Space Invaders Extreme. Or, you know, play it for free in your browser over the internet.

Forgotten Worlds (Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points)
Wii Fanboy says: do not download
It’s not that Forgotten Worlds is a bad game, it’s just that the Virtual Console is so over-saturated with entries in the shmup genre. Add that it’s incredibly difficult and you get an experience that isn’t worth your $8. Skip this one.
