Nintendo trademarks Last Window (Hotel Dusk 2) in Europe

Cing’s sequel to Hotel Dusk is destined for a PAL release, a recent trademark shows. This may cause one to believe Last Window could eventually find its way to North America and we’d certainly entertain the notion — at least it should be importable.
Admittedly, Nintendo actively promoted Cing’s first game and a lot of DS enthusiasts in the U.S. seemed to enjoy it, so we can see it happening. But without so much as a mention during the recent Nintendo Media Summit, we’re not gonna hold our breath just yet. Let’s at least agree to wait until E3, OK?

Nintendo re-applies for Eternal Darkness trademark
Nintendo has filed for a trademark on the phrase “Eternal Darkness,” the title of the GameCube’s Silicon Knights-developed psychological horror game. It tricked us by doing things like pretending to reset the console or lowering a fake volume indicator on the TV screen, due to a low in-game “sanity” meter. Apparently the trademark lapsed recently, and while we’d love to tell you that this means someone is working on a brand new version of Eternal Darkness for the Wii, it likely just means that Nintendo is covering its trademarked bases.
Besides, if you just want a Wii game that will drive you nuts, try some SPOGS Racing. That game is so bad it’s crazy.

Trademark paints a picture of American Okamiden release
The evidence continues to build for a worldwide release of Okamiden. Less than a week after a European trademark appeared for the DS Okami sequel, Siliconera discovered an American trademark for the same thing, filed February 12. At this point, it seems assured that Capcom will localize the game, unless it decides not to do so simply to punish us for presumptuousness.
At the same time, the company filed a trademark for Ghost Trick, another interesting DS game shown at TGS, whose North American release has already been officially announced. Between these two games and Ace Attorney Investigations, Capcom is single-handedly making continued DS ownership worthwhile in 2010.

Okamiden trademarked in Europe
Though we’re confident Capcom wouldn’t leave Okamiden, the DS followup to the critically acclaimed Okami, in Japan, it’s nice to have some supporting evidence. Siliconera spotted a trademark for Okamiden on the European trademark database, suggesting that Capcom plans to publish it in Europe. And if Capcom Europe is picking it up, it’s a sure enough bet that Capcom USA will as well. We look forward to playing it for more than a few minutes!
We’re going to celebrate the impending localization by first asking Capcom about it, and then staring dreamily at the character art of Chibiterasu. So cute.

Trademark suggests Inazuma Eleven headed to US
Level-5’s fab football RPG franchise, Inazuma Eleven, could be headed to the United States if a recent trademark is any indication. According to Siliconera, the US trademark crucially covers “video game discs,” along with arcade machines and, er, cellphone straps. There’s no telling if Level-5 will move beyond a mere trademark and carry out its goal of bringing the game to America, nor is there telling which of the Inazuma Eleven games are under consideration (none of the cellphone strap blogs have to worry about this stuff).
We’d normally be inclined to share some of our own long-winded theories, but the last thing you need is for us bore you with our ceaseless puntification.
Alright, that was bad. But you know that we’re complete soccers for p — [AUTHOR DELETED]

Nintendo trademarks Bii, Cii, Oii, Yii and Zii

The internet is running rampant with speculation that Nintendo is working on a follow-up to its current home console, tentatively dubbed “Zii.” Siliconera discovered a Japanese trademark for the Zii, and many wondered if this was the official name for the fabled Wii HD.
Conspiracy theorists will want to settle down, though. Our friends at Engadget discovered that the Zii trademark request is simply a renewal of a 2006 request. In fact, in addition to the Zii, Nintendo has applied for trademarks covering Bii, Cii, Oii, and Yii. Unless Nintendo is planning on making five new consoles, each with a different name, it seems as though the company is just covering its bases.

Trademark suggests upcoming European release for Dragon Quest IX
While we wait for the real, official announcement we so desperately need to hear from Square Enix, another hint has been dropped about a Western release for Dragon Quest IX.
Square Enix has filed a series of trademarks for the phrase “Sentinels of the Starry Skies” in English, French, Spanish, Italian, and German (search for trademark #008724528 on the EU trademark database to see the English application for yourself). The phrase corresponds closely to the Japanese subtitle of Dragon Quest IX, Hoshizora no Mamorubito (”Defenders of the Starry Sky”).
The publisher could be waiting to get its other big RPG out the door before saying anything. It previously noted that if it does localize the DS game (which it will!) it’ll be in the next fiscal year, which starts in April.

The evolution of MotionPlus’s shape
Thanks to a set of European trademarks, we can get a rare look at the way a peripheral’s design has evolved along its development cycle. NeoGAFfer Shiggy found three trademarks for different case designs of the MotionPlus attachment. They appear in chronological order above.
It’s basically the same throughout, except the bottom corners went from curving inward to curving outward! From the look of the final product, that “lip” is designed to help secure the new jacket in place. Alternate theory: the MotionPlus flares out to reduce the aerodynamic quality of the Wiimote, should it slip out of players’ hands.

Cooking Mama creator trademarks ‘Babysitting Mama’
Siliconera noticed a trademark for a game called Babysitting Mama in the US Trademark Database. The last time we saw a trademark for a Mama game, it was for Pet Shop Mama, which was just a possible rebranding of what was released as My Pet Shop.
This new trademark, however, was registered by Cooking Mama Ltd., the company that develops the Mama games for Square Enix and Majesco. That strongly suggests that this trademark is intended for a new game. So Mama is babysitting now? The fast-paced, task-oriented minigame format transferred pretty well from cooking to gardening, but will it be fun when you’re taking care of some kids? And just how mad is Mama going to get when she has to come in and fix your botched diaper change?

Nintendo may publish World of Goo in Japan
Siliconera found a new Japanese trademark registration, for something called … hmm, “World of Goo”? Oh, wait, that’s probably just that WiiWare game, World of Goo, that came out in other territories last year and was loved by all. 2D Boy’s puzzle masterpiece has yet to hit Japan, but it could soon, judging by this registration. Surprisingly, Nintendo is the registering company, meaning that it may choose to publish World of Goo in Japan. That’s a testament to Nintendo’s high estimation of the game’s quality belief that it will sell!
World of Goo isn’t the first Western WiiWare game from a smaller developer to be picked up by a huge publisher for Japanese release. Square Enix released Frontier Developments’ LostWinds in December.
